Anyone have any experience of police recovering stolen saddle?

As the title really. Don't want to put much online as the case is still ongoing but I was wondering if anyone had managed to recover a stolen saddle, what the process was and how long it took before you got it back?
 
I once had 2 saddles stolen and found them myself several weeks later in a tack shop that had 2nd hand tack. I told the shop who refused to say where they had come from, apart from that they had bought them from a third party so I informed the police. I had no serial numbers for the saddles but I had identified them at the time of the theft, down to scratches and where they were worn etc. All the police did was contact the tack shop's local officer who said the shop owner wouldn't deal in stolen stuff and that was the end of it ! Short of buying my own saddles back there was nothing more I could do .....
 
I recently had my saddles marked, the lady that took my details was a community police officer and advised that if recovered the saddles would be back with me within a week. Unmarked tack I am not sure about
 
We had 5 stolen all postmarked by the police only months earlier but none have ever been recovered sadly. Hope you have better luck x

Thanks! It's such a nightmare, we have vast amounts of evidence but because my saddle is now the other side of the UK I'm having to rely on a completely different police force (who don't seem to have been given any of the original evidence) so it's taking a while to get sorted and silly mistakes seem to be being made.

In north yorks, the police mark with special equipment (which apparently was very expensive) which puts a north yorks horsewatch logo onto the saddle with a unique saddle number which is registered with the owners details, when you sell the saddle you contact the police to update the new owner details. I'm interested if other forces do this or do they just postcode saddles?
 
How do you go about getting your saddles marked? Do you just ring the cops or is there a special department? Fortunately I've never had any tack stolen.
 
You need to find your local horsewatch scheme and then they have saddle marking days at local tack shops and ours also will come out to your home/yard even to mark just one saddle. I popped to a local police station with mine as the police lady that does it doesn't always have access to a vehicle everyday. If you're in N Yorks the net me know and I will give you the contact details for the lovely police ladies in our area.
 
A friend in the police force gave our local horsewatch this site to put on things like saddles , phones etc
She said that the police do check this site if they recover any stolen items that have serial number

Mine have codes on them (Northamptonshire) they stamp the leather with it or engrave the stirrup bar. In my case I elected for engraved stirrup bars, sadly the tack markers let the police lady 'have a go' and both saddles looks like a child has scratched numbers in to them with a rusty fork..... still at least they are distinctive! Like yours, new owners contact the police to change the registration in to their name
