Bit of a long story, but my 6 year old got kicked out in the field by a friend's horse I was looking after back in the spring. It didn't actually break the skin, but a few weeks later a soft lump appeared where he had been kicked (on the big muscle at the top of his back leg/ on his bum. This then opened up and some pus came out (nice!). Anyway, had the vet out at the time and he gave him bute and antibiotics which seemed to clear up the infection, although ever since, the muscle has been quite lumpy and I presumed it would be like this for some time while it healed. He was also quite sweaty on this area due to the nerve damage. Anyway, now a really big hard lump has formed on the muscle. The horse is 100% sound and he doesn't mind you poking and prodding it, vet even did flexions and he was 100% on it.

So the boy is off to the vets tomorrow for a scan just to see what is going on and I'm a bit worried, so some good old HHO vibes would be much appreciated and if anyone has had any experience of anything like this I'd love to know! Thank you everyone

It sounds as if there's a great big old abcess brewing in there, which the original round of antibiotics didn't sort out.

I'm sure it'll be fine. But vibes to be on the safe side.

Bih HH vibes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Tb got kicked bout 6 weeks ago and had a laceration to his knee - vet did all the right things - irrigated it, antibiotics etc etc.

After 2 weeks it looked like the wound had healed, then all of a sudden it burst out of another hole - he was hopping lame and the swelling came straight up after the bandage had been left off for an hour.

To cut a long story short he needed scans, xrays etc which showed bone chips and an abcess, had GA op and they eventaully found calcified pus and an abcess (eeeww)!

Hes still healing after op, but vet said he should be fine - no joint involvement (although he is already retired).

I spoke to my friend this morning (who's horse kicked him) and told her. A bit later on in the conversation she was telling me how she nearly had the mare shot when she was a foal due to an injury. I just said what a shame she didn't, she wouldn't have been able to kick my horse then!

Luckily she saw the funny side!

Ha Ha!

I was on the warpath when mine got kicked (as he is a catalogue of disaster (KS, N & MF)- it was his girlfriend who did it im convinced - one of those love / hate relationships (she got really fat and he told her straight, then he ended up worse off!)!!!

Bless them!!! x Keep us updated as to how it goes!

Mine was kicked in the shoulder a few years ago - the horse that kicked her was shod and there was a cut. It was washed out and treated etc by the vet and it healed nicely. About three weeks later a lump appeared under the scar - the vet came and prodded it then decided to cut it open so it coud drain. Turned out a piece of wood had got wedged in there somehow and needed to work its way out

Sounds like an abscess or haematoma in there. Maybe just some massaging could help disperse it. My pony got kicked higher up on his bum once (god knows how, he's the boss!) but it swelled up in a perfect hoof print, then the hair/skin died and just peeled off in a big hoofprint, it was odd! He is very sensitive skin wise though (ie used to come up in weals if ever smacked with a whip!).

Think all horse's body's reacty differently to these types of things, it more than likely will disappear on its own to be honest but no harm in getting it checked to be doubly sure.
