Anyone have any experience with it?

I noticed my gelding had yellow discharge from one nostril late on Thursday evening, called the vet on Friday & had started antibiotics on Saturday morning for 7 days with instructions to keep him well rugged & warm. He doesn't have the discharge everyday & has perked up a lot from Sunday, never stopped eating though he did eat less hay on Friday & Saturday, back to normal on Sunday & is wolfing down breakfast & dinner. He's also getting fed a mix of soaked hay & haylage. There is no smell & he's happy to munch hay or to drag me over the field for grass but there was quite a bit in his nose this morning. Any one know how quickly the antibiotics can take effect? Scared myself by reading up on it & it seems to frequently require surgery. I'm hoping the antibiotics will work but feeling disheartened after seeing it this morning. Sorry, a bit pointless but just wondering if there are any positive stories about this? If the antibiotics don't clear it next step is an x-ray of his head.

Thanks for your time.

Could there be a tooth problem? Only saying as one of my horses had an upper tooth extracted and there have been a few set backs. Each time creating a problem with snotty nostril. The tooth socket has now healed and we are still having problems with the sinus so are now investigating further. Apparently this tooth is right under the sinus and can cause problems. If xray shows a problem apparently they may flush the sinus.

I would say though in the past it took a weeks of antibiotics before it showed signs of clearing up. Try not to worry (easier said than done I know) but give the antibiotics time to work. And I know how googling stuff can be frightening - I am there myself at the moment :)

It is only Tuesday so he is on day 4 of the antibiotics , give them more time to work before panicking, I would turn him out as much as possible so his head is down to help with draining, feed all hay from the floor for the same reason, I am not sure keeping him well rugged and warm will help, at the moment it is so warm during the day that over rugging may make him feel worse.

Thank you both for replying. It's unlikely to a dental issue, though that is the next route of enquiry. He had his teeth done under sedation about 3 weeks prior to this & the only tooth that has a problem is on the other side & has been growing out the fracture for a couple of years, its not caused any issues to him. If the antibiotics don't work the x-rays will be to look at the teeth also in case there is something we can't see. There is also no smell from the mouth or from his nose, so it's being treated as Primary Sinusitis & he has a cold. Being honest I was dubious of rugging him, however it's only about 10 -11 degrees during the day here & it's dropping to about 6-7 degrees at night so light weight during the day & I think he's going to need a mid weight at night as he was a bit cold this morning. I check him under the rug frequently & he has been okay temperature wise. He's still on 24hr turn out, our fields are also fairly exposed so it can be windy & he's fed both hard feed & forage from ground level. You're right in that I need to learn patience, fingers crossed the antibiotics work!
