Just that really 😊 me and Erik are heading there on the Saturday for gundog day. Our second show- and first GLP class. I’ve never been before so have no idea what to expect but I’m sure Erik will have a lovely time 😂

Anyone else heading along?

I’m considering going as a spectator. Is it just showing or is there agility, meet the breed stalls, and that kind of thing as well? I’m thinking of going but I find showing dreadfully boring. Can’t see the difference between the dogs!

I think a couple of friends are going with Pyrenees and Huskies - my Trial bred whippet like ESS would be laughed out of the ring!!

Not this year as I stay at my dad’s if I’m going and he’s just moved house, how rude 😜 It’s a nice venue with in/out rings so there’s some shade. Good luck!

That’s incredibly selfish of him 😂

Fab, Thankyou! We’re just going for experience- it’s the first weekend show with GLP classes since he turned 6months old 😁 but there’s no puppy class so he’s in juniors and will be the youngest in there bless him!

It’s mad isn’t it! The reason I’ve been encouraged to show mine is that the breed club REALLY don’t want there to end up being a working/showing line divide. So those that work are also being encouraged to show. The breed has such small numbers at the moment, hopefully we can influence it positively as it 🤞🏻 grows

Good luck, no Windsor this year - Leeds is next for us I think.

Maisie - depends on the judge, a friend picked up 3rd in Junior (So Crufts qualified) with a FT bred dog by my FTCh last year at a ESS Club show with CCs on offer!

I didn't think they were allowed to compete with docked tails, unless BASC classes? Mine is very light of bone too - but a very useful dog who can retrieve over distances a Lab would be proud of!

Docked dogs can compete at any show where the public does not pay entrance, so pretty much any show except Crufts and LKA plus a few that are run alongside ag shows. The BASC classes (Crufts) don't allow docked dogs either as the public pay entry so numbers can be weak, it's a legal standing and not a KC rule so unlikely to change.

Thankyou- we’ll need it 😂 he’ll have a lovely time whatever happens 😊

After this, we have National gundog in august, Birmingham city (with the GLPC open alongside it) sept and then will go to LKA too. Hopefully there will be few enough entries at at least one of them for us to qualify for crufts 😁

I had heard that LKA’s change of location may change a few things 🤞🏻

You can stand alone and qualify for Crufts! If CCs are on offer at the show then 1/2/3 in Minor Pup, Pup, Junior, Yearling, Novice, Grad, Post Grad, Limit, Open, Spec Beginner and Vet all qualify you for 2024. If no CCs offered at the champ show then the same placings qualify as long as at least 3 breed classes are scheduled (they don't have to have entries).

ETA: Misread your post...I'm sure you will qualify, and perhaps worth targetting spec biginners or novice if necessary!

😁 we’ve entered Spec beginners at any shows that are holding the class- there isn’t one at Windsor.

Windsor doesn’t have a puppy class for the GLPs either, so he’s in Junior dog which will put us at a disadvantage as he’ll look pretty weedy next to the 18 month olds.

Again, it really isn’t a great drama 😊 just getting him out, experiencing it and getting the breed in the ring is the important thing for me.

We’re at crufts either way as will be taking part in discover dogs, he won’t miss out on that trip 😁

Does novice qualify for Crufts now ? I was with a few other current and past GSD exhibitors yesterday and we were talking about how tough it had been in the past to qualify. Usually up of 30 in a class and only 1st place in certain classes qualified, we were laughing at the fact that we were all keen to qualify yet all agreed that Crufts was not the nicest of shows for either dogs or people, far too many crowds. Aren't we a perverse lot 😏

Well done on the Crufts Qualification @EllieBeast!
😂 By default but Thankyou! 3rd out of 3 👍🏻

The other two dogs were 18 months and 11 months old- he looked very weedy in comparison 😂

He was also more unsettled in the ring- foot perfect when we practiced outside it which shows it’s a ‘me’ thing, he clearly picked up on me feeling a bit more pressured. The judge wasn’t very forgiving with letting me take a bit of time to settle him either. Fair enough I suppose, it wasn’t a puppy class.

He was fabulous company all day though, such a lovely easy boy to take out 😊

But by the time Crufts comes around he’ll be more mature, and experienced. And will he still be a puppy? Or a junior?

He’ll be in junior by then, as he was a November baby 😊

None of this worries me at all- for me the showing is just for fun and doing our bit to get the breed in the ring. He seems to enjoy it which is fab but the gundog stuff is more important for us 😁

(I do want a crufts rosette though 😂 my husband won’t let me live it down if Ivy has one and Erik doesn’t!)

Judges can withold, and he didn't so you placed fair and square (try out our system with gradings for even more fun!!)

Hopefully will see you at Crufts this year

Ooh I didn’t know that (I really am a newbie to this!!) It would have been seen as really mean to not let the little happy puppy have a card though 😂

I like the sound of gradings! Sounds like a much better way of standardising things?

Oh most of our judges use all the grades. Finn has only ever got Excellent, his dam got a smattering of VGs on bad ear days. The Springers usually get VG in Field Trial class.

The Excellent grade is awarded to dogs or bitches that show the characteristics of its breed, are very well presented, have a well-balanced temperament, excellent structure and excellent posture and move well around the ring. These dogs or bitches may have minor imperfections but they are overlooked when other features are of superior quality and the dog is considered high class.
Very Good is awarded to dogs or bitches that show class, while Good is given to those with the main characteristics and features of its breed but with some faults also. Sufficient dogs or bitches correspond adequately to their breed characteristics but their physical condition may have room for improvement. Dogs or bitches that do not allow themselves to be examined, or who will not walk around the ring will be graded Cannot Be Judged. This grading also applies where a judge suspects a dog has undergone treatment to fix or improve a feature. Dogs or bitches that show aggression, dogs whose testicles have not descended, dogs who do not correspond to their breed standard, or dogs with incorrect coat colour, faulty jaws or teeth or other characteristic that could threaten their future health will be graded Disqualified. Instead of Excellent, Very Good and Good, dogs in the Puppy class are graded either Very Promising or Promising, while the other grades of Sufficient, Cannot Be Judged or Disqualified apply as before. The judge will mark a grade card for each dog and give this to the exhibitor. The four best dogs to receive Excellent or Very Good grades in each class (or Very Promising in Puppy class) are then placed.

Only Excellent/Very Good can be placed. Only Excellent can compete for the Green Star (CC equivalent) or CACIB (if an intenrational show).

That’s a fabulous system! It seems mad that the current system here means that substandard animals can be highly placed just because there were few enough entries- I’d say your system is a far better way of doing things!
