anyone heard of/seen this before?

Never actually seen it, but heard of it... always reminds me of an adult version of gymkhana games!

it may well have something to do with bull fighting..............

Yes - it's working equitation, started in Portugal and has it's origins in bullfighting.

Not quite the same as Le Trec, as they have to do a fairly high level dressage test before they do the obstacles, everything is in canter including the bending poles with a flying change each time you go in and out of the poles.

The World Championships were at Hartpury last September, six teams from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and UK, I believe Portugal won with Spain second, the Italians were very very good but the UK came second to last

Don't do it myself, but having watched it, do admire those that do it.

My horse is trained to do it ...great fun
It is based on the skills they need to have to work Cattle ...hence Working Equitation
The dressage and the obsticles need to be ridden one handed and only walk and canter is allowed in the obsicles
The speed section is amazing !!

ive been to see a few clinics done by someone who flies over from portugal and im really amazed and impressed by the level of skill and training.
the horses are so responsive and all to weight aids, as they do it all one handed at the higher level.i love the 'slalham' (sp) with the small circles and flying changes.
i want to have a go with my youngsters as i think its a really good thing to teach dressage(walk and canter anyway) but keep them fresh and interested.
ive been practicing the bridge and the 3 barrels and the tunnel to ring the bell on shantih and she loves it. if only i knew about it before she retired i would have loved to done it on her.
its quite hard and getting the lines right is taking me alot of practice!!!

Somewhat higher level than Trec. How many UK riders can ride with one hand all through the test and do a flying change at will?

The spanish horses have the conformation to find collection easy and natural.

I went to Hartpury to watch the Working Equitation and was impressed. Somehow the Brits in their hacking jackets didn't look quite so impressive as the Spanish and Portugese men in their little jackets and hats.

I could watch that video all day.

There's a lot to be said for the way foreign countries train their horses. Over here every horse seems to be gelded as standard. And yet when I visited the Middle East and Egypt, Spain etc half of the people look at you like you're mental when you tell them you geld your horse.

And they don't have any problems with their stallions etc. Impeccable manners.

I don't agree with heavy handed horse breaking etc but a lot of horses over here could learn a thing or two from the Lusitanos in that video...
