Hi guys,

Hope you are all well.

Does anyone have any experience with equineinfrared.co.uk?

They are a company based up north that travel the uk doing mobile thermal scans at very reasonable (too reasonable ?) prices. E.g £125.00

They are in my area in early November and I’m tempted to have Prince done. I’m curious to know if he has other issues that could be contributing to his back problems. At only £125 I’m tempted to see what it throws up!

Would be very very interested to hear anyone’s thoughts….

I'm not sure if it's the same company but I had Archie done a couple of years back. It showed exactly what we expected to find - his right fore foot was much warmer than the rest of the body with a small hot spot in the left fore too. I was more concerned that he had other issues as well that we were mis-diagnosing as his feet. and that's why I wanted it. It turned out he was remarkably good everywhere else. I discussed it with my vet who was sceptical but it couldn't harm so I went ahead as I thought it might give me a bit more info to go on.

It was much cheaper when I had it done (but as i said it was a couple of years ago) more like £75 if I remember rightly. It was a similar model in that I had to wait for him to be in the area doing a few horses so it could well be the same company. I think he was called Keith if that helps!

I did this with a horse I had suspected had kissing spine years ago, and it didn't give any info. From looking into the science behind it, there is no way they can get proper readings in an uncontrolled situation like an average stables. I asked the vets hospital here about it and they weren't impressed, said it if had proven results they'd be using it as a diagnostic tool in everyday life. I would just work off your vet xrays and save your money for stuff that CAN help.

I actually have a thermal imaging camera (it's one that attaches to my phone so obviously not as fancy as the ones the business guys use), I found it useful for the dogs when I could do regular scans as I could see what was their normal and when things changed to keep an eye on them and investigate further if needed. As a 1 off snapshot in time I'm not convinced how useful they are as there are so many factors that effect them, vets I've spoken to also don't seem to rate them, they have been around long enough that if they were a good tool I would expect at least the top vet hospitals to all have one.

Thanks so much for your replies guys - it reinforces what I suspected…

I guess I am being seduced by the “easy option” that includes no transport.

You see….. I had made the decision to retire Prince as many of you know… and I then contented myself with fun groundwork. It has just gone so so well, I have finally gained what I would say is a trusting respectful relationship with Prince, and selfishly I want to give it just one more try to take him out of retirement and ride (just walk and trot on hacks)

I have my vet on board and the next step is to inject his back with local anaesthetic to see if he is more settled u set saddle. His masseuse who sees him once a month is also a professional rider and is happy to get on him in the weeks leading up to his vet assessment under saddle.

To bring him back into work I’ve spent a small fortune on trotting poles (or whatever you call them) and we have been working together every day to help him work his back properly. Obviously I’m a crappy novice but I’ve watched a huge amount of videos and we appear to be making progress.

I guess I was seduced by the cheap “thermal imaging” option as I’m looking for quick and easy “new” information about his body.

In reality, I know nothing worth knowing usually comes this cheap and easy…

Arghhh! I don’t even know what I’m rambling about guys…I just need to be patient and continue with my rehab and then get a professional rider on him. This will then tell me what I’ve always wanted to know - was his unpredictability u set saddle due to me and my nerves (and him not being ridden/worked consistently.. this is what I’m hoping ?) OR… when ridden by a skilled rider, is he still the same.

Whatever I discover will give me closure. I love this horse and he will be with till his last breath. Im just not ready to 100% give up on a ridden relationship as I can feel my confidence with him on the ground grow each week… Am I being selfish to continue investigations?? They will never be surgical, I would never put him through that at 17…. Damn it, I just want to ride him at walk through the forest, that is my ultimate goal, I just can’t give up just yet

if you do decide to get back on him (when everyone has checked everything for you) - forget about the horse you were dealing with before. You have done so much with him he must be feeling so much better and there is so much more trust between you now. You are dealing with a totally new situation so blot out the past!!

your plan sounds very solid and you have the right support in place, so keep on the path you are doing. I have three with kissing spine, and with correct work they often can stay in work with no issues. It's definitely worth trying, and the pole work and stuff will have really strengthened him. the vet, physio and the rider will have a better idea once the ridden work is started. fingers crossed for you!

When you say thermal scan
Are you talking about a thermal imaging camera
I charge 40 quid to go around someone's house looking for drafts. Just remember that they only measure surface temperature not core temp
