I am off to the yearling sales tomorrow am, and staying til at least Wednesday and looking forward to it. BUT, I've never been before, and feel like I may stick out like a sore thumb. I feel like I need a little guidance in where to go in the evening for a meal and such like, so if anyone here (probably a huge long shot) can meet up with me, and at least point me in a good direction, at best take me, to a nice place/show me the sights then I'd be really grateful!! :)

Many thanks!

ps, I promise I don't bite.

I have spent many a day at the sales and you will love it. Big eye opener for you :) there are several nice pubs along the high street which is just around the corner from Tatts. Have a wander, its not a huge cosmo town but still has plenty to offer. Hope this helps

Most people drink in the yard pub after the sales.

Equally the Thai, Indian and Chinease are very good but you will need to book.

If going out of town, try the Plow at Ashley or the Star at Lidgate - again you will need to book!

You won't need to go anywhere to eat!

Tatts has it all!

The wall box kitchen is brilliant for on a budget!! There are plenty of places to eat at tatts and all have the tv to show you what lot there are on so you won't get behind.

Other than that you have the usual KFC and kebab places along the high street!

Well I don't know Newmarket terribly well, only the race courses and Tatts itself but I am only a spit away in Cambridge and will definitely come over for a pint if you still want company. Just give me a shout. I am lousy with cold mind you!

Probably the reason you weren't getting many responses is because the sales are on all day and go on to the evening, then of course, there are feeds and beds to be done on those still up at Tatts.

Usually we're up there every day for the sales and would have been happy to show you around, but unfortunately personal health problems and hospital appointments have made it impossible. We will be there next week but that's too late for you.

Do I assume you're on your own? Would suggest you don't hang about in the High Street area come late evening.

Whereabouts are you staying? If you're looking for a cheap and decent meal in the evening, then there are loads of pubs in the High Street ranging from the Harvester type to more upmarket ones (Rutland). There's also fish and chips, kentucky, etc etc.

Also, feel free to make use of the Darley facilities - there is a wooden hut type of building near the entrance you're welcome to go in there for a hot or cold drink and something to eat too. (If you come up for the later sales in the year - you'll have the opportunity of going to the studs to see the stallions parade - free bus pick up will take you to the studs).

Sadly not much to do in the evening though unless you want one of the the lap dancing clubs, or De Niro's nightclub (need to be a teenager there nowadays though).

If you want to visit a few things around Newmarket during the day - you do have the National Horse Racing Museum, National Stud, etc and Hoof Tours (Museum can organise this) will arrange a trip around the local sights and gallops etc for you - but check this out because I don't know when they stop for the autumn/winter season.

If you want to know more, feel free to PM me, I work in Newmarket (have a mobile snack bar) and serve the vets, farriers, and even the jockeys so do know a fair bit around town, - on top of that breed our own racehorses, and have horses in training so may be able to offer you some local knowledge if you want to ask away.

Shame you didn't make it to the sales today - you could have seen the top lot go for nearly 2 million. I'll be there definitely on Wednesday to greet a yearling I sold last year there.

Hope you have a great time. If you want to call me for a chat, feel free. Have fun.

I dont think that they are interested cool mix. I have posted about the sales, but more interest is in the "which rug" post! Good luck.

Rubbish - not everyone spends every minute of every day on the internet! The reason "which rug" type posts get numerous replies is that everyone/most people have an opinion of them and can contribute to them. A question about a specific area will never get replies from absolutely everyone and maybe the people who can help are elsewhere when the question is asked.

Enjoy your trip to the sales. Penniless has given very good advice above. I am local but am very busy all weekend (as usual!).

you get a wide range of people from the very nice and very posh who are polite always say please and thank you which is nice as you do get alot of very rude and arrogant people to who just point, grunt and push there way into anywhere and just as you get the feed barrow out to feed up and go home they appear and want to see everything a total pain in ass. but most people are nice you will see some amusing sights of excitable colts and fillies if you get cold go into the sales ring as its heated in there so for us who are leading up it gets quite warm lol enjoy you will see loads
