We've had duplicate names on the yard at the same time before and have had fairly unimaginative ways of differentiating between them:

Bay and Grey Solo, Big Charlie and Wee Charlie, Coloured Jack and Spotty Jack, Big Fred and Wee Fred. Greek Abi and RDA Ab.i Also had Izzy and Tizzy though son named Tizzy as she was Izzy's foal so just had to speak very clearly when talking about one of them!

Is companion pony new to you? If so, I'm sure a nickname will develop once you get to know her/him. My poor mare has about 5 or 6 names and gelding has 2 or 3! Or you could change it to something very similar?

Yes, companion pony arriving any day! Just getting all kitted out for her arrival, and prepping my mare! (Ie, 'you're going to have a new little friend, she'll be smaller than you, and bay in colour. Her name is also M, Now, be nice to her, ok?')
Is it just me that talks like that to our horses?!?? lol

Yes, we bought a Section A that had the same name as the Welsh Dx. They were both shortened versions of 2 very different names. We changed the pony's name to a different shortened form and then called her by a nickname for the rest of her life.
More recently I bought a mare with a name which rhymed with our elderly cob mare's name. The name was almost a deal-breaker but she was perfect for what I wanted in every other way. They had both had their names for years, so couldn't be changed. They coped as did we. Then sadly the old mare had to be pts, so we no longer have the problem.

We used to have two Rosie's.
They were either Rosie 1 & Rosie 2.
Or one would be Black Rosie and the other just Rosie.
And no your not the only one who has full blown conversations with their horse lol.

Yes, almost didn't buy the second one because of it! But after seeing him still for sale 3 months later, I went to see him and fell in love. I just call them big and little!

I have 2 at the moment with the same name, 1 small the other big so obviously little P and big P, I previously had 2 bay geldings here with the same name of a similar size which proved difficult enough, it was made worse by the fact that both had owners with the same name so I couldn't even prefix with that, several times I had conversations with people about the horses and we were talking about different horses which proved confusing to say the least.

I've been on a yard with a Milliecob and Millienotacob. Easy to tell the difference as Milliecob was a heavyweight cob and Millienotacob was a TB ex racer.

We had big Boris and little Boris. BB was 17.2hh and LB was 16.3hh so not much difference. We tried Boris and boreece for a while but that was even more confusing!

We had a few horses called Monty at the riding school I used to work at. Monty came first, then the next one became Montoo. For the life of me I can't remember what the pony one got christened. Monthree doesn't quite work, does it? :D

We had three Brandys at one stage too. Brandy, NB (Naughty Brandy) and LB (Little Brandy).

The Farmer And His Two Horses

Once there was a farmer who couldn't
distinguish between his two horses. Since he didn't
know what to do he asked his neighbor for an advice.

"Why don't you trim the tail of one of the horses,"
advised the neighbor.

"You are a very clever man" said the farmer.

For a couple of months it was all right, but then the
tail grew back to its normal size.

"You'd better trim the mane of one of the horses,"
advised again the neighbor.

For another couple of months it was ok, but then the
mane grew back.

"I think the best thing to do is to look for something
characteristic that doesn't vary with the time, like the
height of the horses," said the neighbor.

"You are a very wise man, I'll measure it and tell you
about it."

After a few hours the farmer returned to his neighbor:

"You were perfectly right. I've measured their height
and indeed the white horse is 3 inches taller than the
black one."

When I learnt to ride a million years ago, there was Big Pippin and Little Pippin, next yard had two Captains, then we had Big Ol (mine) and Little Ol. At one stage I ended up with a horse and two dogs called Ollie, Polly and Molly. Horse remained as Ol but Polly became Doodle and Molly, who I still have, is Mo or Mo Mo. Otherwise when I yelled for one of them, I used to get all three.

I wouldn't worry - a little companion will soon have a whole range of names to choose from: 'pipsqueak', 'mini-me', 'That @$#*** Pony' etc etc etc :)

Mine all think they are called 'Oi!' - well, they all look :)
