Anyone here on Equine Vet Nurse?

I am looking into an opportunity that may come up. I am looking to become an equine vet nurse. The option is to start at the practice and once a course becomes available, to go on the course. (Think this might be a couple of years as another lass is waiting to go on it).

I am 33. 34 this year and it would mean a drop in salary. I can however move back in with my parents (eek!) .

The way I am looking at it is that could I do my job for another 26 years before I retire? The answer is no as it involves 12 hour night shifts that are crazy busy! I could however work with horses for 26 years!

It is a decision I need to make as curently I earn good money, but work stuipd hours that are draining, I live in a nice little flat and have my beautiful horse. I dont see my friends that often as they are all married e.t.c

I would still keep my horse, but as said, live with the folks!

What is the training salary for EVNs? What is normal salary for EVNs? Has anyone else taken the leap of faith? I need to make a decision before I am too old and stuck in my job forever!

I am not a EVN I was a VN but gave it up 3 years ago.

Just a few things to think about (although I don't know what you are currently doing so you may have thought about these). In most practises you are still going to have to do shift work and maybe on calls. You will be so tired at the end of most shifts (like you said above I use to be so drained - emmotionally and physically), there may still be not much time to see friends. Will you be able to fit you horse around working hours or will you need some help? (more money). If you have a while to wait to till you can go to college its a long time on not even a NVQ2 wage! (although it does give you plenty of time to make sure you get loads of back ground knowledge).

Can you really cope with living back with the parents having been away from them?

Having put all the negatives vet nursing as a whole is a fab career, and I loved every minute of it. But I am pleased I did it but now don't (mainly money wise)
