This is a very hypothetical/just maybe/may or may not happen in the future question :o

Certain circumstance in life are progressing and changing and just possibly I will have to put this house on the market next Spring. It may or may not sell - who knows and I will get 50% of the value - ie not enough to buy another house!

However if it does sell (say quickly) then I will have to rent somewhere that is within the school catchment area until daughter has finished A levels (she starts them next September). After which I can move into OH's farm (if we are still together ;) ) but that is just over the border in the next county.

I have only casually looked at rental properties in the area on line but just about all of them don't take pets and let face it I have three large dogs, a cat, chickens etc (horses can stay where they are). So I am guessing that anyone on here for example managed to get their rented house (that accepts pets) word of mouth?

How did you go about renting somewhere with an entourage of animals?

I do:)

My cottage is on the farm where my horses are on livery - YO?farmer knew I had Sweep when I moved in - he gave me first refusal when other people left as I had my horses there so wouldn't be bothered by the other liveries coming and going:) Since then I have got Max - told him and as the reason was for security as he and his wife hear nothing in the farm house and it was me that was awake at 1 in the morning when I thought we were being burgled he was fine about it:) I also have a cat who lives between here and in the barn/stables for mice catching purposes - again was fine about it:)

Before here I lived in a cottage on one of the other Estates here - although they said no dogs/cats in their lease I asked when I was looking - they didn't mind dogs at all especially as it was a spaniel - it was a standard clause but as long as you asked they were happy about it:) A general rule of thumb round here is properties on any of the Estates are generally ok about dogs and even some of the private lets are too - again I think ask up front and offer extra deposit for cleaning when leaving:)

For us it was word of mouth - bloke at the yard's girlfriend had a house she rented out, she had dogs, current tenants had dogs, wasn't an issue at all.

We would dearly love to move to a more suitable property but what I've found is that letting agents expect an additional deposit for those few properties that will allow pets - as they expect two months rent as deposit and the first month up front the total cost is well beyond our means, as well as the fact that rents in this area have increased by about £100 PCM in the two years we've been here.

Much better if you can find a sympathetic dog-owning landlord who doesn't deal via a letting agency.

My hay farmer boyfriend and I rent and between us we have 2 dogs... had to find somewhere fairly quick and I think we were very lucky... we only have a front garden but as we both are luckily able to take our dogs with us to work it works well for us.... there are places out there but sometimes its just luck... :)

We just registered with a couple of agencies...only had to fork out for 1 1/2 months rent as deposit.... only condition is when we leave have to have the carpets professionally cleaned....

I still live with the 'rents while I'm in college and we rent from a private landlord association type place. We lived here for 13 years and then we got a dog the July just gone. There was never a 'no pets' rule but we still wrote to them out of courtesy and they wrote back saying it was fine. I think a landlord would be fine with a well behaved quiet dog x

I rent a farmers cottage which is in the main village with my boyf who is a "local worker" at a museum my landlady is involved with. We have three dogs. I think if we had to move we would have to caravan it (hence my thread a while back) can not imagine someone being willing to let three big dogs in.

Im a bit nervous atm as we had a neighbour who although was a gossip was OK. But now having a local celeb next door (radio show host) and I know the house next door has had a lot of work put into it, ours hasnt lol.

Just wondering what new neighbours will be like. Might invest in a new gate as our front doors are only seperated by a gate and hedge. But I can just see it now "ergh three big dogs barking ergh". Hope she hasnt got cats lol. Cant believe im nervous about a new neighbour.

We rent a friends house, he doesnt care about pets etc, he knew we had a menagerie before we moved in.
Almost all agencies state no pets as standard, Id ask around first, then try the freeads/local paper for a pet friendly landlord, many are more flexible than you'd think, especially if you look at somewhere a bit dated.

You can add me to the 'farmers cottage' list! I think it very much depends on where you live. In a countrified area (with plenty of farms!) it's a bit easier than in a town I guess. I had a nightmare trying to find somewhere with just one well behaved border collie, but that's in herts. and everyone seems so anti dog round here. I spoke to loads of agents who wouldn't even put me on their books, private landlords who all said no and then put ads in tack/feed shops and online. I did find one place through an ad at a tackshop but it fell through and yes, the place I have now was word of mouth. There are a couple of websites that specialise in rental for pet owners but I found them pretty useless. The few places I did find that allowed dogs were really expensive, certainly no one bedroom flats or terraced houses.

We're looking atm and I've found if I ask, most landlords accept pets (this is through agencies mostly) you just had to ask. One wanted £100 more for the bond and one wanted proof of cleaning the carpets when we left.

I have always rented with 1 dog and my current place I have 2 dogs - Landlord was fine!

I have rented rooms with my little staffie since I have had her (she is nearly 9yrs old) and all word of mouth :D I also rented a flat (annex) with the landlords adjoined and they even allowed me to foster dogs! I think I hve been extremely lucky

My current place I know my landlord from a previous rent and although the tenancy states no dogs, he has given me written permisson :D

I have never gone through an agency, its always been word of mouth, and so far never had to pay extra and no extra clauses in tenancy agreements although I do usually have a carpet cleaner and a professional house cleaner in when I leave :)

Good luck in your search if you have to rent :)

Im very lucky my landlord (friends mum) is fine about the dog and guinea pig as they love animals. But I couldnt find ANYWHERE at all before I was lucky enough to have this house.

The first time I rented it was through an agency but the owner of the property was a farmer and as long as we looked after the place he was fine. Now I just dont tell them :o but Im moving soon anyways.
My parents rent from a private estate and they are much more relaxed about animals :)
