Hi all, can anyone help? My youngster had his 2nd lot of blood tests taken to see if the last tests results were correct, well just heard back from the vet.

Last test 3 weeks ago;

GGT - was 89 -now 124 (normal should be 0-53)
AST - was 376 (just above normal) - now 568!
Bile acids - normal
inflammation levels - normal
Alkaline phosphate (?) - normal

Sooo vet now concerned as was hoping if anything levels would stay the same but they have increased soo much in 3 weeks, ron has no other clinical signs apart from being very laid back and lathergic? FYI Ron is a colt 17months old.

Has anyone else had this, know of anything is could??

Vet said need to try and get a urine sample next then also look at getting him in for a scan/biopsy etc.

Help.....

Liver & kidney problems then oh poor chap. Your boy sounds like he is overdosing on proteins and some minerals can cause toxicity if it's nothing systemic or poison. Has the vet suggested a detox?

What other symptoms? Swelling anywhere?

What is vet looking for with doing biopsy?

Did you worm him recently? It has been said that Stongid can cause temporary liver problems.
Was his WBC low? This would be a sign of something more serious. You need to check that his pulse rate and heart beat are normal and also his appetite.
If all is well just wait and see what vet comes up with.
Try not to panic as I am sure it is nothing. I have been there recently so I know what you are going through. Hugs and vibes.

Thanks guys...answers to above;

No other symptons As yet apart from being lethargic
Was wormed with equest just before first blood test about 3.5wks ago hence why we waited and tested again.
Vet hasn't mentioned detox yet, gonna try and test urine if I can get a sample.

Wbc? Is that white blood count, as far as I understand that's come back as normal.

MM... if it turned out to be anything to do with where he's grazing (which i'm sure it won't!), give me a buzz and he could probably go out with my boys for a period of time while you sort what you're doing with him as we're only round the corner.
Hope he gets better soon. Hugs from me and Apache x

Has he been grazing in marshy/poor pasture that has been grazed by cattle and/or sheep in the recent past?

Horses can suffer from liver fluke (which is more usually a disease of sheep and cattle, but if there are none to be found it will infect horses - and even in rare cases people!!) and this will raise liver enzymes like your horse has.
