where to get insurance for the travel?
do you need an import licence other than the vets fit to travel certificate?

Hi,

yes I have, I sent daughters horse over, though it was not summer, but you will find most of the lorries will have aircon cctv etc... I had to sort the paperwork out myself, basically going to the vet, he then came to check the horse (horse had rug on, he gave him a pat, walk round him, and said he was perfect to travel..lol) I then went to the vet a few days later, he wanted to see the passport and all the documents from the transporter (they emailed me copies of everything I needed) I paid 3€ yes 3€ and got the transport certificate. Horse has to have a passport and be microchipped for this, though I would imagine whoever you are buying the horse from or the transported will arrange this..

Not all transporters include insurance, so my daughter got him insured in the UK, which included the traveling.

shop around regarding transporters as prices via greatly, Ive used John Parkers, though I didnt have problem, friends have, so I would'nt use them again, and ETA

Ive also had 3 brought over here too..

where abouts near Valencia?.. Im only an hour south of there myself.. :D

thank you! he is passported and micro chipped, his owner will be getting him vet checked for the ministry papers... we were thinking about using john parkers as he has been recommended to us but they said we would need to insure him to come over but i cant find anywhere! we were quoted £840 for the transport from john parkers which i thought was quite cheap tbh :o

and he is coming from Beniganim near Xativa :D

oh.. my friend lives in Xativa, only 40 mins from here :D
this is who I used www.eta.uk.com

and Ive set up a page on FB called Horse Owners in Spain... I few on there have used transporters..

We insured with NFU.

As long as the horse insurance is in place before the 14 days exclusion then you can travel so diseases/illnesses are insured for.

Easy.

That's s good price you have been quoted but I would query the timings for that distance especially as the transporter mentioned doesn't feed hay on his trips, so my friend ended up with sending her horse to rossdales (she works at rossdales) as they thought the poor thing was impacted as horse was not passing any urine or faeces. One ultra sound scan 6 hours after travelling showed not only an empty bladder and dehydrated horse but a completely empty intestine!

Her veteran horse landed at schipol from Canada and then took 3 days to get to her to Newmarket! Turns out the horse had not been fed for 3 days and was empty inside not impacted!

Rule of thumb for every 1 day of travel there needs to be 1x24 hours in stables.

As the driver hours are 18 hours and the full amount of time a horse can travel is 24 hours transporters tend to take short cuts and just stable up as their argument is horse has only travelled 18 hours, not 24.

We use Charles Cunningham and Julie Magnus (JMRT) she advertises in HH

Express Equine Europe (Charles Cunningham) will unload for the full 24 hours so that trip would actually take 5 days, 3 days travelling in total with 2x 24 in stables.

Day 1 travel
Day 2 24 hours min in stables
Day 3 travel
Day 4 24 hours min in stables
Day 5 travel and arrival

With Equine Flu now in northern france and EIA in Italy it's only a matter of time before they nip across the channel!

Good luck with your new stallion! Very exciting!

My instructor has imported 4 from Portugal with no problems using John Parker as linked above and he sorted out insurance for the journey etc and all got home safe and sound
