Anyone jump in a dressage/straight cut saddle?

I once jumped a log out hacking in the woods in a Wintec Isabell - never EVER did it again, it felt like the muscles in the fronts on my thighs had all been ripped out! I had no balance and couldn't go with the movement at all. IMO, there's a reason jump and GP saddles are called jump and GP, and dressage saddles are called dressage saddles..!

Probably didn't help that the mare catleapt the darned thing, but still..!!

Hi, yes I do. My horse has had saddle problems in the past before I bought her and hates anything forward cut. She has big shoulders and not a lot of room for a forward cut saddle so I have a VSD style saddle which is quite straight cut. I don't have any problems with it, I have quite long legs but my knees don't stick over front too much.

jumped my old boy 1.10 having never jumped that high(either of us)... bit of a whim was praying he would run out secretly and i could pretend it never happened but all was fine actually not awful but hardly comfortable..

Only for fun and messing around. Used to do working hunters when I was showing in the teeniest little showing saddle *eek*.

Wouldn't do competitively/seriously, the shape of dressage/straight cut saddles just don't put you in the right position and if anything goes wrong....straight out the front door!

Over small jumps I find it's not a problem - I hack, canter in a light seat, jump logs and mini xc fences in my dressage saddle, and will pop over a jump in the school if the mood takes me. I don't feel at all unbalanced or uncomfortable - love that saddle!

I actually taught my horse to jump in his dressage saddle, because it was the only one he had at the time.

However, as the fences get bigger it's more of a problem. Once the horse is starting to stretch and bascule I want to fold more and get up off his back a little. For that I need shorter stirrups, and in my straight cut saddle my knees threaten to come over the front. If I leave my stirrups too long my legs swing back and it would be too easy to come down with a thump on the horse's back if something went wrong.

I jumped my YOs fell over a few 2'9 spreads in a wintec isabell the other day without a problem, have jumped quite a few times up to about 2'9 in dressage saddles, 3'3 in VSDs. I think I would have been ok up to about 3'3 in the wintec but wouldn't want to go any higher!!

i taught my 4 year old to jump in a dressage saddle.

her shoulders are huge - i have now bought her a GFS GP which i love. but yeah - nothing is impossible.!.. :)

I used to jump in my VSD, only small jumps though, felt okay.

However I have a GP now and do feel more secure when jumping.

I really miss the VSD for flatwork though... I think I need two saddles :D

I have a VSD and a straight cut showing saddle. I jump in the VSD, but wouldn't want to jump in the showing saddle, although I know trendybraincell jumps in hers!

Yes I've jumped in a dressage saddle. You must remember to hoik up your stirrups a few holes and removing the thighblocks always helps and as long as you don't rely on your knees too much you'll be fine. Before I could afford a saddle, I use to jump in nothing but a bridle. Although this is best done on a pony with no whither. Whithers are bad for your foo-foo!!!

Nowadays, I am rolling in luxury as I have a jumping saddle AND a dressage saddle. Yippee!!!!!

No. I had a couple of times when my jump saddle was being reflocked but after having a pretty awful fall will never do it again. TBF it was a big oxer on a big moving horse but really hurt myself.

Oi you...trying to get me in trouble?!?! :p

I have a straight cut show saddle, my main pass time is dressage, so for that purpose it fine. But this last few months I have done a bit of jumping with him (clinics/lessons) but since this is a rare occasion and I do not plan on competing him I don't see any point in the expense of another saddle.

People have asked me how I manage to jump in it, I don't know any different and feel very secure riding in it, though I imagine a proper saddle for jumping would help my position

I jump in my wintec dressage saddle- the odd jump up to 1.20 and competing but only 2'3ish. Did a 2'9-3' indoor eventer trial but went in VSD for that. TBH when you've never jumped in a jumping saddle and not even in a GP for a good few years it makes little difference  Probably helps that I'm abit stupid and ponies are 13.3 :p

I've jumped in a old dressage saddle, that didn't have any blocks at all. Only little jumps, though the Dizz did power over the stream lol. That was fine.

Jumped in a Barnsby VSD and did not like it at all. I have long legs with a long thigh and I could not get to grips with any sort of leg position. Jumps were only about two feet/two feet six, but the Dizz, being still new to jumping, was over jumping.

Had a friend who jumped BS in her Wintec dressage saddle . She was going at some speed and it was, um, interesting (think hair raising!), to watch :cool:

I do small fences and cavaletti's quite often in my dressage saddle. I did once jump a 1.20 oxer in it, but that was to prove a point (to a saddle fitter who was telling me a jumping saddle did fit, when I could feel my horse protesting, put him in his dressage saddle, hey presto, horse jumped fine!) But I personally wouldn't jump that height again in it, it was a little hair raising!

I jump one of my client's horses, as the owner says she finds his jump difficult to stick on! He has a VSD for jumping, I keep tactfully mentioning that a jumping (or atleast GP) would be better, especially bearing in mind that she has a dressage saddle for flatwork! He is difficult to sit on when he jumps (16.3 WB with ALOT of power!) but the VSD makes it even harder. If the owner had a better saddle i'm sure she could get to grips with the jumping far better.

I have a working hunter saddle on my mare.
its very straight cut, but is designed to be able to jump in. My mare will jump 1.40 without battering an eyelid, but anything above 95 she just throws me out my seat and i'm hanging on at the other side. I know you don't need your kneerolls as i've jumped bareback about 1.10 before, but it keeps my legs in a dressage position and it's difficult. its great for hacking and stuff.

Thankfully I had my saddle fitter up on Saturday, my lovely jumping saddle has been to get fitted to her so with any luck, i'll be able to jump 1.40, not get thrown over it :D

I used to jump in a fairly straight cut WH saddle after jumping a close contact jumping saddle I feel unsafe jumping 3"3 i ceertainly would entertain jumpoing an ope in it now

I jump at home and at shows in a dressage saddle hahha
just because she has a funny back and when i got her she has been ridden in her dressage saddle for the time being cause it was the only one fitting her right
it killed my knees for the first time i jumpe her over 2ft in it ahah
but now im used to it its fine ive jumped up to 1m15 in itt
only downside is she used to stop alot last year so its not fun when you have a dirty stopper i just flew off at most of them haha and its not great cause i dont have as such leg support as on a jumping saddle
