I have several questions re; cost of livery, vets costs, general affordability and quality of care in liveries if anyone keeps horses in the city please as we are considering moving, and I have been hearing some horror stories about livery costs! If you can help will you let me know and i will pm you my questions, please and thank you :)

Heya, I'm a dublin livery person, and I've been around a good few of the yards so PM me any questions and hopefully i can help!

South Dublin you'll be looking at €100+ for livery per week. West Dublin is more around €90 and Northern Dublin is around €90 too. Some yards have began offering DIY/ Assisted DIY however this is VERY unusual, DIY livery is basically unheard of in Dublin.

There are several riding schools and livery yards around the county so you should be able to find one that suits you. This is a link to an Irish equestrian forum http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=996 and http://stabletostable.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?2-General-Equestrian . You can take a look at them and they may answer some questions, if you have anymore feel free to PM me!:)

Thank you both so much, it so different from keeping horses in Uk - I have grass livery, private paddock, x2 feeds a day and hay for £150 ... Guessing that is not going to happen in Dublin then?!!! We def want to try south Dublin/ Kildare/ Wicklow

not a chance of it happening in dublin i fear! I'm in north county dublin and we have basic grass livery for 200 euro a week in a nice yard. Thats the cheapest i've found out my way. Otherwise it's a basic 90 euro per week for livery on average.

The stable to stable forum is a great suggestion. You would def get more info there.

If you head more towards kildare/wicklow you might get more options, but depending on where you are living the cost of petrol and travel times might negate any of the benefits. Had you anywhere in mind to move to?

Not really, but I know most competitions would be around Wicklow-ark low or carrickmines, OH would work leopards town and I would be working city centre.

I'm actually kind of wondering if we just ignore livery and rent a place with grazing instead in that case.

I'm shocked by the prices... What the heck happened the recession ? :)

where do you plan to be living? It usually makes more sense to get a yard near to where you live, rather than where you work.

Also what kind of riding do you prefer to do- hacking, competing, clinics, hunting? There are niche yards that would be good fits for you for that kind of stuff.

Think it's bad now? There are STILL places charging €150-€175 per week for full livery, not even competition livery! The chances of you finding a house with land to is very unlikely even in the surrounding counties. If your husband is to work in Leopardstown then there are stables and livery yards within that area however, that general area of south dublin would be quite expensive. Since you may be near the N11 and willing to travel a while on it into Wicklow you may be able to find livery slightly cheaper but then again, it probably won't be worth it once you add petrol on.

Booooo!! That's all very disheartening. Think they may have to go live with my parents and I could visit at weekends

Well since we have free rein at moment will live wherever it's easy to keep the horses and for commuting access, play polox which is why Wicklow or carrickmines are handy areas, but I don't mind boxing them up to drive to competitions, and we hack/ riding club etc most of year anyway
