I bought and sold my horse Abi through Safecobs and am trying to find out how she's doing. Does anyone know her? She was sold through Safecobs in June of last year. It was a difficult sale for me, I still miss her and would just really like to know how she's getting on. The contact promised by the dealer hasn't materialised :(. She's a chestnut mare, full-up 15.1hh, must now be 9/10.

I'd really appreciate any word of how she is; just hoping she's well and happy.

Here are some pics from when I had her:

They have a Facebook page, on which said dealer frequently comments on, might be worth a try contacting her on there?

Well, I've been in contact with the dealer about this recently. I don't want to go into any detail here but let's just say she always gives me the brush-off ;)

From memory, people here have contacted the passport agency to see if she's been re-registered with them. Would they contact the new owner on your behalf, maybe?

I don't know :(. When I asked Safecobs to sell her on for me, she was in excellent condition and a lovely horse and sold very quickly. The dealer asked me just to allow them a couple of weeks to settle in a bit, which I understood, but since then has just brushed me off, so I have no idea where she is.

Sad though it is, if you've sold your horse and been paid, there's not a lot you can do. The sellers can't give you a new owners details, that would breach data protection. If your details are in the passport, the new owner might contact you at some stage to say how the horse is

PH - I'm sorry poppet but your mare's new owner may not want contact from a previous owner, especially if that owner had to sell the horse reluctantly. Try to think of it if it was the other way round. If you'd just bought a new horse would you want a previous owner pestering you all the time, maybe weepy and asking for the address to call in etc etc etc? See what I mean? Not trying to be nasty. Can't you let her go from your head and your heart and let her enjoy her new life? New owner and new horse need to be left alone to build their own bonds x

I would be annoyed if a dealer passed my contact details on to the old owners.

Fair enough if it's the other way round, and the new owners want YOUR details.

Very sorry OP but it does surprise me when old owners get all weepy when new owners don't want to know old. If you sell a horse you have to accept that a new owner may not wish to contact you or pass on contact details. They have no obligation whatsoever. If you sold your horse privately I might have some sympathy for you but you sold it to a dealer and in my book when you do that you don't want to know where the horse goes on to.

It does nothing for a dealer's reputation passing on information, in fact it could come back and bite them on the arse. I also think it is a little unfair of you to report Safecobs in this manner as they have done nothing wrong but it could have people think twice about going to them.

Just remember the good times and hope that new owner may want to contact you at some point in the future.

Hello all, thanks for your replies.

Sorry, I haven't explained myself very well. I'm not expecting the dealer to give me the new owner's contact details, and quite agree that she would be wrong to do that.

When she sold Abi for me, I stressed that I would like the odd update and when she sold her she said this would be fine. Her website also states something to this effect.

What I wanted was for her to pass my details on to the new owner, that's all, and she hasn't done this. Not a great problem, I'm not some deranged stalker, I would just like to know how she is and as HHO has such a wide reach, I thought I'd give it a go.

Hope you get some news of her in her new home, you're right, HHO is a good place to try. There are a lot of genuine people out there who would be delighted to know a little of their new horse's history, me included.
Good luck.

I randomly came across the person who bred my horse - he's freezemarked so definitely him. By that point I had owned him for 10 years, so it didn't matter that what I heard was negative. However, had I been given the information when I first had him, it would have coloured my opinion of him. It might have changed the way I dealt with him which could have changed our whole story.

I know someone who sold a horse that killed it's new owner. Not the horses fault, bucked on turnout, freak accident. So what happens then? Does the horse become unsaleable?

I sold my TB when I was pregnant as I couldn't manage two and I feel that no news is good news. I hope he's happy and well but I wouldn't want the new owner picking up the phone five years down the line to say he shook his head. It was a deliberate decision to sell through a dealer as I didn't want direct contact with the buyer.

My slightly rambly point is that I would not wish to be in contact with a previous owner (i didn't quiz my husbands exs after all!!) as I wish to form my own relationship with the animal based on my own experience.

The new owners must surely have your details in the passport, so perhaps they are choosing not to get in touch.

Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, but probably time to move on (())

I traced my old horse last year, I googled his registered name and he came up as being in the Endurance team with Solihull riding club. I contacted the riding club directly and asked if they could pass my details on to his new owner, and the same day she sent me a huge email and loads of pics! Was really lovely! Turns out he had been passed around a bit from when I sold him but he's now in a lovely home with owners who love him and he is doing great - she still emails me updates!

Have you tried googling her registered name? If she is in a RC/PC team she should come up? Or ask the dealers to pass on your email address and number? Good luck!

The dealer is silly to say the old owners can have updates. A mate of mine bought a little cob recently and reluctantly let the previous owner visit. She was horrified when the girl turned up in jods as if she wanted to ride! Like she says, you don't sell a car then let the old owner have a drive occasionally!

If I bought a horse and the old owner wanted to know how the horse was getting on as long as the new owner is happy ie to give an email then no harm done. It has to be the buyer who is willing to be in contact and I can understand Safe cobs perhaps havent got the time to chase people up for old owners.

However I suppose if Safecobs could just pass your details to whoever bought it fine. The only thing is if the horse is not ok perhaps Safecobs dont want to say.

I was contacted on numerous occassions by an old owner in fact I offered them the pony back when I decided to sell(they had visited their pony at my home many times and I was ok with that). So they didnt want pony back but said they would if I ever sold etc.
I sold pony and then the old owner all weepy got back in contact with me and I found the lady I sold it to only to find out pony had been PTS, which I wasnt expecting. I personally could have gone nuts at the old owner by this stage who became a right pest!

So I can see both sides but must say I was pleased to have information from my horses previous owner as it helped me understand the quirks and saved me a lot of guessing!

At end of day I hope you can find your horse but you cant blame the dealer that sold it for you for not being able to trace it, they probably dont have time!

Lol - talk about cheeky! I think the worst thing would be having an old owner doing the "you don't want to do it like that" speech

OP, I'm with you, I would want to know what happened to my horse if I sold it on ..... I think that makes you a good person and if I was the new owner, I would love to know my horse was special enough to have been parted with reluctantly - sometimes keeping in touch works really well though you have to be prepared to not like what you see and to bite your tongue a bit!

More that that, I think you could argue that legally, having some idea where the horse went was a part of the contract. At least she should give you a reason why not or if not giving you the specific details maybe just an idea of the home the horse when to.

Practically though, it doesn't look as if you are going to get a lot of help on here just at the mo. Why not repost on the LOST STOLEN TRACE part of HHO, that may give the new owner more chance of seeing it if she is interested in the past of their horse.

Whilst I don't think you have any right to demand contact info on a horse you have sold I do think its nice to offer to be in contact and do what you can to be available.
I have posted in lost/stolen/tracing to look for an old pony of mine and would be really nice to know what happened to him
