My BIL is a long distance runner. He often competes in 24 hr runs where he might run for around 140 miles.

I was saying about endurance riding as my friend does this, but I don't know how far an endurance horse could go in one ride. I guessed at 40 miles but then was thinking my friend had told me some do 100 ?

Anyone know?

Ta.

100 miles in a day is the pinnacle of the sport. There are rides ranging from 20 mile novice rides with set speeds to 100 mile endurance races, where the fastest horse wins, subject to passing the vet.
It's interesting to note that the sport of Ultra Trail running actually came about from endurance racing. The Tevis Cup from Tahoe to Auburn, a 100 mile race ride, was already established when a rider who was without a horse decided to see if he could run the distance within the 24hr time limit. He succeeded, and the following year, the running race was held alongside the Tevis Cup. Over the next few years, running the Tevis Trail became more popular, and the Western States 100 was born, held separately from the Tevis Cup, and so the modern sport of Ultra Running was born! Both the Tevis Cup and the Western States 100 are seen as major challenges to equine and human athletes!
