Anyone know any vets near wisbech cambs that have experience with heavy horses?

Had a worrying visit from my normal vet practise, sent a temp who obviously trained on a racing yard or rocking horse factory and expects a 15.2hh Ardennes to weigh the same as a 15.2hh TB!!!

Still none the wiser as to why shes hopping lame, might have had better luck calling out a plumber! Realise heavy horses are a niche market nowadays but must be somebody who knows a bit about them??

any suggestions muchly appreciated

Love the Ardennes breed! You need an old school vet (ideally aged 85) if you want a correct diagnosis first time! Otherwise its "give it bute" (by someone who just euthinased a hamster) and a huge bill all for nothing! I have been there believe me!
 
Thats what I ended up with to! Told to bute her up for a week and "see what happens" and what has happened? shes got worse! mutter grumble mutter . . . . . . .
 
jus a quick update:

Rang Norfolk Equine Vets, smashin chap came out who had worked with a few Ardennes b4. Gave her a very thorough going over, including x-rays which as he brings a laptop with him he could have a look at while he was there.

Got to the route of the problem (deep set abcess) and gave me loads of advice to help control her on going arthritis problems. Didnt get the feelin he was in a rush at all and felt he was doin everything possible to help her.

Cant recommend him enough to anyone looking for a Vet in the area.

Hans is brilliant isnt he, so glad you liked him and have sorted your problem out. He is certainly the best vet I have ever had and like you say never in a rush and nothing is too much trouble.

Am I right in thinking that she has a curly mane and tail?
I ask because I have recently bought a heavy horse, who came with Westphalian papers. However, she has no brand, so I think that she was imported (several years and owners ago) with the wrong papers. I am wondering if she is Ardennes and she does look very similar to your mare, although a slightly darker bay and heavier. She weighs over 800kg according to our weight-tape, in fact she's actually off the scale, and is on a diet.

We are settling in fine thank you, so much to do but it is getting there just need some rain now, we will have to all have a meet up again soon I have lots of rugs for you to clean :).

Yep she is a be-you-tiful little lady. It was her eyes that sold her to be honest, she was in a bit of a state when i went to view her but she seemed so patient and honest i knew i couldnt leave without buying her. They say you should never buy the first horse you see or because you feel sorry for it, but i did both and am very happy i did :)

She normally has a straight mane and tail but they go a tad crimped when she gets wet lol. She has quite a chesnutty coat in summer but goes very dark bay in winter. Shes currently on a diet to as she got a bit of a chubster over winter, her first without a rug on and i werent sure whether she would lose weight because of it, shouldnt have worried though, lives on fresh air lol

This is always an issue, especially vets who haven't seen the smaller heavies. I swear one day I will hang a sign round Fany's neck "I am an Ardennes, not a TB"

Hope Emily is better soon and you find a decent vet who knows their breeds. Last pictures I saw of Emily she was looking good.

These vets seems to know their breeds, they maybe able to recommend a local to you vet.

Crazy aint it, have to explain to folk Ems like a short shire lol. Couldnt believe the old vet, said she were at least 100kg overweight (shes about 20kg over which is why shes on a diet) and when shes lost "all the extra weight" she would look like my mates horse that was stood in the next field, my mates horse being an american quarter horse! Even if i never fed Em again shes never gonna look like that lol.

Hope you an Fany are both well, hows her training going?

My mare certainly looks very similar to Emily (what a lovely name), although she is a tad bigger, 16hh.
I felt sorry for mine too, although that wasn't the main reason I bought her, because it was so obvious that she and previous owner did not get on at all. In fact the woman was frightened of her. The mare seemed to be very withdrawn and switched off.
She has relaxed and shown how affectionate she is in the 3 months we have had her. And she is still completely bombproof, which is the main reason I bought her. The only thing that seems to worry her is being tacked up, which we are working on.
 
Cheers :) gets a tad confusin though as we're both known as Em lol

She wasn't keen on her tack at first either, looked at her bridle like I was trying to put a blindfold on her and made a little whine noise, soon get used to it and no more noises phew :)

Think they've got a brilliant nature, soooo laid back. Em quite happily lays in the field wi me sat next to her, falls asleep wi her head on my knee, she dont arf snore and dribble lol
