I have a 12 week old filly foal who currently stands at 11.3hh. Her dam is a 14.2hh ID x. The sire is unknown (as mum was a rescue case). I was wondering whether anyone could give any indications of how big she may be at maturity? I was thinking maybe 15.3hh???. Thanks!!!.

I was told to measure the length of the front leg from ground to the point of the elbow - in inches - when the foal is 6 months old

then double that figure to get the height at maturity

it's never been more than 1 inch out over a fair number of foals

so e.g. if at 6 months the elbow to ground is 31 inches then the foal will end up around 15.2

god if thats true mines going to be a montser !!

I measured my 2.5 yr old at 6 months and it came out that he'd be around 16.2

I laughed at that as his mum is 14hh and dad was 16.3 so my theory was he'd end up 15.2

I've stopped laughing now as he's 15.3 already........

My filly is also going to be the biggest monster ever!! she already has the longest legs!!

I shall remember to measure her giraffe legs at 6 months and see what is revealed.......

thanks! xx

My filly was born with legs about 2" shorter than her 16.1hh dam, looked like a giraffe! She then grew into her legs! She is rising 3 and going to be about 15.2hh and a stout little B.

Wow thats amazing to think their legs are so long at such a young age!! Suppose its that survival flight mechanism thingy in the wild! Luckily no wild cats where we are!! I hope....!!

I think it depends on breeding because some grow uptill 6yrs may not be much but they will still give another inch from 4-6. I think Lippis are late, along with ID's & Traks though I have known TB's grow another inch from 4yo to 6yo.
