Thought I'd ask the question on here as recommendations are always better - Do you know of any good cheap surfaces - we're based west yorkshire - Minimal use - there's only 2 users at the moment so it won't get that much hammering and will be well maintained!

Suggestions please!

Our yard went for woodchip because its cheap. its been over a year now and is holding up very well although it should have regular harrowing because it ruts up more than some surfaces.

I've seen a wood chip school - but never ridden in one - would it get slippy? And does it ride deep? Would you be able to jump?

Woodchip can get a bit deep and unlevel and it wouldnt be a surface I would choose for jumping in as it skids underfoot. However for home use and general flatwork it would be a good one for you. You would need to top it up every now and then though so thats worth factoring into the ongoing costs.

Watch you get good quality chips - sounds silly but Ive seen schools covered in horrid mould where the chips have come from a dubious source!

Thanks Spans - I'm seriously contemplating this - I've (somehow?) always been anti wood fibre as a footing - I think it's because when I was a child the local arena to hire was wood chip (barkchip... I was a child of the 70s

) and that put me off - but I think it could work for us as we wouldn't use the arena that much and the whole eco-friendly aspect stands us in good stead too!

The same way we all say we know each other 'through riding/dressage/eventing/met them on the circuit/did a clinic with them' - come on Kate, you know the drill by now
