Just wondered if anyone knows who the meat buyer is at York. Guy with ginger/grey hair apparantly.

Not for me, a friend was going to bid on one today but didn't. It sold to the meat man, she is now feeling bad. If anyone has a name and contact details I will pass it on.

She just wants to try and buy the horse from him.

From what I have seen in the past they do try to pass them on for more money. It might be too late, he could easily have sold it before he even left the auction.

Might make her feel better to have tried

the best thing she could do is to phone round the nearest Equine slaughter houses maybe and ask about the purchases from York sales ( if any) as there are only limited slaughter houses that take equines

Atkinsons is closet probs, also greens. Those are the biggest slaughter houses round here I think....
I hope she doesn't beat herself up about it, far worse fates in this day and age unfortunately :(

They're both knackermen - you pay them, not the other way round and they don't process carcases for meat. I think the slaughterhouse at Thirsk (Yorkshire Country Meat) is doing horses now. Before that they generally went to Cheshire.

Ah my mistake, apologies. It may well be the horse has the weekend then before prehaps slaughter at the beginning of the week...? Good luck to your friend!

I thought slaughter houses only killed on certain days as a vet had to be in attendance.

A vet does have to be in attendance. Most kill every day, but different species on different days as it's a faff to change the line between species and most start early and finish early. I very much doubt that a horse could go through York sale ring on a Friday morning/lunchtime and get to a slaughterhouse and be killed all on the same day.

Is it only me who is repulsed at the thought of horses going off to slaughter? Am I too soft? I guess it's because I see them as such trusting animals and liken them to dogs more than livestock. The thought of any of mine ending up going that wasy makes me shudder. Would be nice to hear if your friend has any success although I can't help with who the meat man is :(

no.... me as well, totally agree with you. I hate the thought of it but realise that it is sadly best for some, i will never sell any of my horses, they are with me for life, for that very reason.
Would also like to hear if your friend manages to track him down, would be great if she did :-)

It makes me sad too, but not as sad as thinking about horses having to be transported to Europe only to be slaughtered over there, so an arduous journey AND still slaughter bound :-(

God it is awful to think about though :-(

It is sad, And i am one of those who has to sit on her hands if i'm at the market and notice the meat man bidding. However, Especially at the moment, It can be a blessing in disguise for some. Especially colts - There are that many around at the moment, going so cheaply, So many people are impulse buying and causing far more suffering than a swift end at the hands of the meat man does.

I'd rather see them go for meat than to some of the people who 'rescue' them.

I agree, however the person that wants this mare is experienced. Soft yes :D but does know what she is doing

No you are not alone I am also repulsed at the thought of horses going for meat.

Horses going to meat dont bother me, i find the idea of pet horses who have served people for years given their all ending up on a plate wrong. I find it hard to understand why with farm animals you never eat pets but when it comes to horses or ponys when your done its food.

if its a choice between slaughter or a tough life being neglected starved or tortured, i would have no problem with any animal - horse, dog or cat- being slaughtered humanely.

your not alone but I believe all animals are sentient beings but that's a whole other debate

Most domestic animals in our culture are either farm livestock (ie bred for food producing) or pets (companion animals). Horses aren't quite either really, are they? They don't live in our homes (usually!) as companions, but they're not quite livestock either.

However, I always think it's a bit odd when people who happily eat a plate of beef are horrified at horses going for meat. I personally wouldn't eat horse meat because of my sentimentality about horses, but I don't feel qualified to say it's wrong for other people to do so.

I just hope the "meat men" handle them kindly and kill them humanely. :(

very well said

As the poster above said, it depends how you classify animals in your own head. People get upset about horse slaughter and yet battery chickens have absolutely horrific lives and 95% of the population happily pop cheap supermarket chicken fillets in their basket or eat them at restaurants, while at the same time being horrified at hunting/horse meat/slaughterhouses.

Because battery chickens never carried Kings on horseback nor fought our wars alongside us ;)

However, I am a staunch supporter of humane rearing/slaughtering and transportation for any animal, I can't abide cruelty!

But horses didn't do that out of loyalty or bravery, they just happened to be the size, shape and temperament to make them useful in battle.

No-one's found a use for chickens in war yet, but if they do, I'm sure the chickens won't have any say in it... :o
