Anyone know the meat man at York Horse Sales

Most domestic animals in our culture are either farm livestock (ie bred for food producing) or pets (companion animals). Horses aren't quite either really, are they? They don't live in our homes (usually!) as companions, but they're not quite livestock either.

However, I always think it's a bit odd when people who happily eat a plate of beef are horrified at horses going for meat. I personally wouldn't eat horse meat because of my sentimentality about horses, but I don't feel qualified to say it's wrong for other people to do so.

I just hope the "meat men" handle them kindly and kill them humanely. :(

I know what you mean, I'm am in a position where working on a farm, there is a difference in the way animals react to you. My horse runs to me for attention and trusts me to care for it and expect the same where as say most of the pigs (we have a pet one) would happily bite my leg off to get food faster, the pet one jumps up at the gate for attention. To me its a trust thing if i want to trust an animal or person they have to trust me. So if a horse is reared for meat never made to trust and protect me fine eat it. I don't see it so much as the breed of animal more the way the animal is raised. I also agree with other about all animal should be cared for to a high standard and would never eat meat that had come from battery or poor conditions.

if its a choice between slaughter or a tough life being neglected starved or tortured, i would have no problem with any animal - horse, dog or cat- being slaughtered humanely.

Totally agree tbf but.

After some of the states ive seen its the best place for some off them sadly. When i was younger i wanted to save every animal going to slaughter but now i have grown up i see it is important to have a meat man. As sadly for some horses/ponies its the only place they will ever get any peace and a ending to there life!! ( Please dont jump on me if you dont agree its just my opinion).

I would never send ANY of my own animals ever.

Ring York sales and ask them to pass a message to the buyer. If the horse had potential to make more money arcs different sale she might be kept. An Arab mare went through two sales, one was York well below meat money. She ended up at exeter but by this time she had been noticed by her breeder and bought back. Good luck. Act quickly!

its just the same as cows going for meat

right the the same dogs being boiled alive in china

faeroes islands doing a * GRIND* on pilot wales herding them in and slaughtering them families watching each one die before they die

Sorry it again repulses me animal cruelty full stop. Endless journeys starving thirsty

Most of these horses were once pets- part of a family. Loyal to their end

their payment this one way journey after the *family* got bored the pony got too- old -not fast enough or lame.

This is not a debate this is my views.

If you cant keep the horse anymore as its lame or ill PTS . End its life with dignity .

What a wonderful animal lover you are

I really don't see why people are so repulsed by horses going to slaughter, when they will quite happily eat cattle, pigs and sheep. Pigs are far more intelligent than horses, and therefore are even more aware of what is befalling them. Nothing worse about slaughtering a horse than slaughtering any other mammal.

Whilst I know the slaughter houses have their place I must admit the whole thought of it is repulsive to me. None of mine could ever of would ever end up there. If anything happens to me there's very strict instructions for what should happen to them.

I'm the same with any animal though. I don't believe any of them deserve that end and as a vegetarian I don't eat any meat either due to the fact that I can't stand how the animals are kept and slaughtered. Not a debate just my personal choice and reasons for it.

My family aren't vegetarian but I tend to buy 'free range' meat from small local farmers for them in the hope that it helps.

I'm the same. I don't eat meat or poultry, though I do eat fish.

He will be at Holmfirth today. Horse sale starts at 1.00pm. He will probably have taken the horse there if it hasn't already been slaughtered, which seems unlikely given the time-frame.

i AM WITH YOU 100% and been a sticked vegetarian for 34 years

I see animals as individuals we can survive with out meat I have 34 years proof.

those who eat fish are piscatorians.

Sadly there are far too many horses being bred and with a rubbish economy its a sad fact there are people who will make a profit from them in a way many of up would never consider. The meat man fills a gap in the market like it or not.

For the record mine are with me for life and will did or be pts on the yard.

Does anyone know RockysMum in real life to get a message to her about this? She hasn't posted since yesterday evening, but if someone knows her can they let her know about the message above from Pearlsasinger. I would hate to think there could have been a way to find this mare and then to have missed her again :(

Thank you everyone.

I haven't been on here but I did tell the friend in question about the thread and to keep looking at it. So I am sure she has seen everything.

Thanks and I will update you when she lets me know the outcome.

Hello RM, glad you are on here! I was worried you wouldn't see the message from Pearlsasinger saying where the meat man will be today. Please let us know if she manages to find the mare, I do hope so (I love a happy ending!) :)

I agree I would rather see an animal go to meat then to have an awful life, however in this story the person in question clearly regretted a decsion not to offer the horse a home and is trying to locate it to give it a chance!. I bought a disgustingly emaciated 2yr old from Beeston through similar circumstances, however I bid against the meat man for him. In the bigger picture of things rightly or wrongly these people should not be allowed to take such disgraces to be sold, however the vet on site said if they dont allow it through the sales, it would have to go back with whoever bought it in to the sale, then investigated etc and in that time the horse would 'disapear' By putting through the auctions the horse has either a 2nd chance of some mug ( ie me!) buying it, or the meat man buying it and it gets put out of its misery.

It is sad though to see a healthy young horse being sold for meat, you know in your head what potential and enjoyment could be gained from it, this is the difference in my mind about seeing a cow being taken for meat.

I think in the end who do you blame? In my view its the total overbreeding lark that goes on, just because it has a womb... dosent mean you need to fill it. ( that applies to all animals to!)

Going slightly off the subect - but hens do go to war. Can't remember who the guy was, but some eccentric soldier parachuted into the Arnhem debacle in the last war carrying the regimental mascot - a cockerel. Someone tell me who it was or I'll be thinking about it all night!

Back on the subject, I SO hope your friend gets to the horse in time. Please tell us what happens.

Sorry, this was duff information. I went to Holmfirth today. There were very few horses and unless he went and left early, the man in question was not there. This must be the first time ever, that I have been and not seen him - and whilst I certainly don't go every week, I go pretty frequently. The few horses there were mainly cobs, mostly coloured, with a couple of Section As - one bright chestnut and the other steel grey.
