Indeed. I’m fairly sure horses drowned in Hyde Park after carriage incidents in the early 19th cen.
I was aware of the same story but had only heard it verbally from an elderly carriage driver and wasn't sure whether it was apocryphal. A quick Google found this though (it includes other horse-related incidents in Hyde Park):

There were a huge number of accidents involving horses in London and other cities, both before and after the introduction of the motor vehicle; there are debates on Hansard about the problem ~100-150yrs ago.
