My new horse was very poor and underweight when i purchased him 6 weeks ago but doing really well and putting lots of weight on, however he has got this dry, flaky, scabby and sore patches come up on his face and now starting to appear on his nostrils, he is rubbing them so making them sore and causing it to make the area bigger. Ive heard some horses can be allergic to alfa a which i have been feeding him on, is this true and would it cause this? Also ive noticed a few burrowing holes in his stable each morning where he is digging down deep in the walls of his straw bed and also wondered if it might be an allergy to straw although he has been on a straw bed since ive had him and this has only cropped up in the last few weeks. Anyone seen anything like this before? Ive used a malaseb shampoo on it and it looks like it is drying up a bit since but he is still itching it. Any suggestions???

Looks like Ringworm to me, I think I would get a vet to have a look and if it is give you some cream asap as its highly contagious!

Or maybe sarcoids?

My big fella had the two concurrently a couple of years ago and in early stages was hard to tell which was which

I agree it could well be ringworm. RW has a very specific smell too, if you scratch the scabs it smells like mouse wee

First catch your mouse, make it wee and then compare the smell! :D

I agree it looks like ringworm.

Wipe it over with vinegar and it will be dead in no time. Wipe your tack with it too.

Agree with sykocat def ringworm, just get some imaverol, equine pharmacy type places sell it, it will soon clear it up, also it is a self limiting thing anyway

We had a new horse in recently with a skin condition that looked very similar to this. Is your horse scratching much/at all?

Scrapes showed that it wasn't ringworm.

We treated with pour on Ivomec and within 10 days the flakiness had gone and new hair growth was coming in.

I have seen Fox Mite look like this......treated with Frontline after consulting the vet. Complete recovery.......is it raw and weepy? The case I saw was, everyone convinced it was ringworm but it didn't respond to treatment for ringworm hence the fox mite treatment.

Ringworm doesn't normally go just around eyes or in such large clusters but it could be related to it.

Don't know what you're feeding but can I suggest adding both brewers yeast for skin, hoof and digestion improvement and also linseed which is another skin and weight conditioner. They will both improve the general health which will be help fight this once treatment is started.

my Filly had something similar to this- we thought it was ringworm and treated accordingly for a few weeks. It was only then that we deduced that her itchy dry skin, itchy scabby mane and scaly areas, as well as the fact her immaverol wasn't working, pointed to sweet itch!

I also would suspect ringworm from your first picture but the fact it is around both eyes and no where else puzzles me a bit. I'd get the vet to come and scrape it I think.

O, and don't come near me. I always catch ringworm when one of the horses gets it. Last time I had it on my face. Ewww :o :D

I was going to suggest Wondergel by Gold Label, but not sure as so close to the eye. Wondergel is brilliant (I have used it on myself). It is good on bacterial, fungal skin problems as well as ringworm, and not ridiculously expensive.
