Hi All

Random but slightly desperate question - my mare is being treated for Hepatitis and one thing she is having is Hepatosyl. The makers recently withdrew a load due to issues with one batch - and since then it has been out of stock everywhere. I have tried all the local vets but it is not something that is commonly stocked in volume as rarely needed. I have tried all the pet med online companies i can think of but although they show 'in stock' when you call they don't have any. I currently have some one order (have had for over a month) and just keep getting 'out of stock hope to be in soon' messages.

She has been so poorly I would really like to keep treating her rather than having a break simply due to supply issues. i am really worried and a little angry. Does anyone know of any vets or other companies with Hepatosyl Plus 500MG in stock??

Thanks so much

You will be very lucky to get Hepatosly, there are alternatives (I work at vets ordering drugs) but cant for the life of me remember the name. Get some Milk thistle that will help. Will be in work later and will get the name for you :)

When I last checked Viovet ahd the cheapest Hepatosyl in the UK, but I haven't checked to see if they have any in stock recently.

In the mean time if you can get hold of any micronised milkthistle seed (try pesasus health) you can use that for liver support until you can get more hepatosyl :)

Thanks all so far - I tried vetuk but when you call them it is actually out of stock - my current order is with Viovet.

She is on milk thistle, plus steroids, plus ironXcell, plus a load of other supplements, Hepatosyl is just the tip of the bankruptcy iceberg (insurance run out) but determined to get her better!!

If anyone works in a vets and has some in stock - or knows alternatives then do let me know!!

Thanks so much

We are ordering in the small animal hepatosyl (100mg caps vs 500mg caps) for our clients, I've just ordered 9 boxes for one client and they've come straight in, as far as I am aware it is only equine hepatosyl that has the issue so ask your vet to order in the smaller capsules.

Thanks Murphy - so are you treating 5 x as much of the small animal ones - i didnt realise they were the same just smaller.

So if she was on 6/day of 500MG you would be treating with 30 x 100MG

Thanks!

I know how awful it is to be in this situation. My horse used to be on potassium bromide and that went off-line at least twice a year. It was a total nightmare as I always knew I only had a few days grace before we would be in trouble. There used to be two manufacturers and then there was only one so I couldn't even just go to Boots (who had helped me out previously) with the prescription and not many people have the odd half kilo in stock. The stupid thing was, it was an POM but you had to have a prescription to get it and yet laboratories could get it without a blink for calibrating scientific instruments. I now admit that one of my colleagues saved the day on one occasion by getting me some from work on the QT. Occasionally her phenobarbitone was unobtainable too, but at least most vets carry some. I had to do quite alot of explaining why I needed at least 250 tablets and sometime I could only get the small dog size, but my relief was on a par with any crack addict!!

What an absolute nighmare for you! My boy had Hepatitis at the end of last year and was on Hepatosyl Plus, but my friend who uses a different vets was prescribed Equistro Legaphyton instead - I know it isn't the same and maybe just a more easily digested Milk Thistle (? not sure what else is in it) but maybe worth a try in the mean time?

Thanks so much Pasha - will have a look at that as never heard of it. Hope your boy is all better, this is the second time my girl has had it in two years - hoping the steroids will knock it on the head this time... Really appreciate your info x
