My 5year old Choc Lab has been to 3 different proven dogs and will not tie?, have been told this isnt essential but she has never fell in pup with any of these dogs, but on her last heat she jumped the fence and did a runner with a bloomin Collie that had been hanging round and GUESS WHAT?? she was in pup and by pup i mean 1 huge pup, It almost killed her, it died inside her and knocked her back legs from her and she had to be rushed to the vet for a C/S,I am now terrified to put her in pup again but dont want her speyed as she might put on weight -(she is the only lab that atteneds the vets that is the correct weight for her breed -Vet loves her lol)

I dunno why but my aunt bought a purebred westie and it never went in pup 2 westies but to a JR (giving us our devil pup) and to a maltese which was gorge
but been to 3 diff westies and never been in pup

Would it be safe for her to be bred after having a caesarean? I wouldn't do it to any of my bitches.

If you don't want her spayed then you will have to take good care of her that she doesn't escape or that male dogs can get to her. My 3 unspayed bitches live totally free range on my farm; to date none have had any accidents but I am extra careful with them when they are all in season and if any dog were to start hanging around then they would be locked in at night. Thankfully all of the neighbouring farmers have bitches too.

That gives me really good memories!! My Old Basset who is Dog, the breeder (our life long friend) tried him with her Bitches (there was 2 in season) he wasn't interested at all but are very interested in Black labs bitches!!! However one day he escaped (yeah a basset do run away!!!!) hasn't been seen for 3 whole days and he was found UP the road.... He must have scented and ran after a bitch cos he was bit sore downstairs... few months later i kept seeing little black labsX with very short legged, slightly longish bodied puppies in the same area, the date matches, Father unknown but is sure a Basset! (i asked the owner) SO who knows.....

Edited to say, Freud (basset) had been around black labs for long time and he may be more comfy with them than their own breed??? Would that happen?

If your Bitch had very large pup and required C/S Chances it may happen again. Not having her spayed is a risk to take. If you are worried about weight issue, ask your vet for advice on what to feed her and also she'll need frequent exercise.

If she didn't tie then possibly she wasn't presented on the correct date. To determine the correct day to mate her your vet could perform vaginal swabs or serial blood tests to determine her ovulation date.
However, I would think long and hard about breeding from her if she has had a caesarian previously as it is highly likely she won't be able to whelp naturally the next time either and will most likely need another caesarian. This can be more tricky the second time round due to scarring and adhesions to the previously surgery.
Also dogs only put weight on if fed too much! After speying or castrating they are more efficient at utilising the nutrients in their food but so long as you reduce their ration accordingly they won't put on weight. All my dogs have been neutered and none of them have been overweight - as you can see from the dog in my signature - this picture was taken years after she was speyed. It sounds like you are doing a good job keeping her weight down at the moment (knowing labs are like walking stomachs) so I'm sure you'd be more than capable of keeping her weight down if she was speyed too.

our choc lab gets contraceptive jag every 5 months to stop her seasons, she hasn't gained any weight. but they have to stay on the jags for life (unless you want pups), she wasn't spayed due to possible clotting problem and the litter of pups she had in the past weren't very good.

Thanks everyone for your advice, i have some more options to think about now,i wont get her spayed but i will keep a careful eye on her, the only reason she got caught was that she jumped over the 5` fence in the back garden -we Jack russell proofed the garden when we got the JRT pup -didnt think we would have to go to the other extream as well lol as for the weight issue OH is a Feed Merchant and so knows about what dogs require feed wise she is 5years old and people still say what age is your puppyand they are talking about the Lab lol, imay try the contraceptive jag though is it expensive??
