Just wondering because once it gets dark in the evenings it won't be possible for my daughter to ride her pony after school, as we don't have a school and too dark to go on the roads. I can exercise the pony but daughter needs to ride more than at weekends as pony is new to her and they need to build up a relationship. Once a fortnight she has PE as last lesson of the day and I'm thinking of asking the school if she can be taken out of that to ride her pony instead.

I have heard of one person who has done that - anybody else managed to do similar?

My daughter has PE on a Tuesday afternoon . She's been told she can come home after lunch but we're just about to ask if she can finish school before lunch and then she'll have a jumping lesson in the afternoon. It might help that her deputy head also competes and so far she's beaten him every time they've competed against each other (and so have I!).

Thanks folks, sounds encouraging

I did through both my GCSEs and A-levels.

I was competing regulary at that time and it took some persuasion from my parents and trainer. The school also had my trainer fill in some silly table thingies that were meant to ensure I was on the yard and riding during PE lessons.

Like your daughter, my PE classes were always in the afternoon and as they were 2 hours + it worked well that I just knocked off for the afternoon.

Head of P.E came to watch me compete once as "proof" that i was following other sporting interests and that was about it.

It worked pretty well for me as we had double PE on wednesday and friday afternoons and I competed in the evenings on both those days.

PMSL - daughter's deputy head suggested that he came to check on her jumping lessons - but I think he was going to bring his horse!

Yes my daughter does it regularly too. We do the odd schools comp where she wears her school rugby shirt for XC and takes the photos in to school.

It helps that she was placed at the Nat schools champs last year and the school did a bit on her and her riding in their newsletter.

I work at a secondary school where I over riding as an alternative PE option but due to funding it is not something we can do every week.

Talk to your head or head of PE - you may find they are very supportive especially if your school takes part in schools SJ or dressage.

That was going to be my next question - who should I approach. Not sure who the head of PE is (daughter has only been there since September) so perhaps best if I write a letter to the head? The school does have riding teams and daughter has just put her name down for them, so that should help. She is also on their gifted and talented athletes programme because of her running ability and competes in tetrathlons so I could tie in the need to ride with that!

If you don't ask, you don't get! I should think a letter to the Head would be the best way.

At one of my old schools riding was part of the syllabus, and when I was in the upper 6th at Grammar school I had Wednesdays off to hunt instead of a study day, well, I just never went in and as my Spanish Master hunted then as well nothing was ever said.

I used to ride during my lunchtimes and free lessons, and it could be one of the sports for GCSE & A-level PE

And I never ever skivved off A-level Chemistry to hack out, never

Yes I do riding instead of PE, but the school organises for 5 of us to go to a riding school, rather than go to our own horses. I don't really see why she shouldn't really unless she is very prominent in school netball teams etc and needs to be there for training.
