I'm thinking of taking out Gold Membership with the BHS. I know they offer insurance with your membership and I just wondered if anyone is only covered by this and has no other insurance policy.
If not, why not?

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm awful with things like this and hate anything involving financial arrangements.

This only includes public liability insurance, so while it may be suitable if you are riding someone else's horse your probably need some extra cover if you want your horse to be covered for vets fees and/or death. You will also need extra cover if you want personal accident cover as I don't believe that this is covered by the BHS either.

It is kind of like insuring your car third party only, you will be covered for damage caused by you and your horse to other people but not for any damage to you, your horse or your property.

It is only 3rd party liability so you could discount that aspect of your normal insurance to make a saving if you are troubled by not being covered for vets fees, certainly NFU will quote you without 3rd party liability.

I am insured by BHS gold as i ride horses that aren't mine -this covers damages to others as said above, and I am on the insurance policy for the establishment I ride for to cover myself and the horse.

Hi, I am only insured with BHS Gold. I keep my horses in my own paddock that has a footpath in it and this insurance would cover me if they did any damage to anyone or thing whilst turned out etc.... I spent a lot of money insuring for vet fees etc but became frustrated when it came to making a claim and then that piece of the horse being excluded for the next renewal etc. with thw amount i was spending on the premiums i now spend less a year in vet bills and i do INTRO eventing. you need to work it out for yourself but personally i have saved money but still got adequate cover.

I am.

Had NFU for 7 years. stopped it this year when new underwriters rules came into place for vets fees exclusions.

I am only insured with BHS. My horse is totally worthless and I would only get cover on 1 leg so seems no point in insuring her.

The nice thing about the BHS policy is that it has no excess, they pay the whole claim - unlike normal horse insurance policies.

Has anyone noticed though that WHW is now also including £10m public liabilty insurance with their membership, which is also the same price as the BHS.

I only have gold membership insurance. Cancelled all my horse policies this year as the premiums were getting so and the exclusions are ridiculous. I put the amount I was paying per premium into a seperate bank account to help cover any vets fees.

My 2 retired ponies are only covered by my BHS gold membership as if anything happened to them I wouldn't put them through an op. They've both gone way past vets expectations!

But my in work chap is insured up to hilt through the NFU. Interestingly, I've had a lot of claims over the past few years (long story, you'd need more than a hot choccy to get through it) and my insurers have always been brill and paid up. They also agreed my loss of use for my cob within a week. I've heard a lot about people who haven't had such good experiences but always been good with me. Which has helped some horrible situations!

Hi All

Sorry to bring this thread back up but its what I am looking into right now. I pay insurance for all 3 of my horses, 2 of which I compete. What does/doesn't BHS insurance cover you for exactly? Is there any excess to pay? Can it cover you competing? Or best to keep own insurance? Just very confused.com!!

I am , I just carry the risk of the vets bills myself and I am not interested in having the horses value insured if the worse comes to worst I just buy a new one.

The advanatage of the BHS third party public liability insurance is that it is at a level of £10,000,000 (Ten Million Pounds) which is the amount needed these days as a result of a recent House of Lords ruling that stated that animal owners where responsible for any accidents their animals caused whether it was there fault or not.

Veterinary treatmentcan be very expensive especially if it involves surgery so it is worthwhile having insurance cover. On this board alone I believe some people have had bills up to £20,000. I believe that most insurers cover up to about £6,000 but this seems to vary from company to company.

I'm insured with WHW for third party liability and personal accident, it's £10 million cover for 3rd party and £15,000 for personal accident for £52 a year. I don't bother with vet cover as set aside an amount for cover. I also have a veteran that makes the vet cover not worth bothering with.

I only have BHS gold after I paid insurance for years made a claim and got nothing like the amount I thought I was insured for. I can afford to self insure for horse injuries but I am about to take out personal accident insurance for me.

The thing to remember with self insurance is that you chose how much you will send in vets bills .
Personally I would not spend £ 20,000 on a vet bill for one horse if you are self insured you need to clear about the responibity you are taking on and the decisions you might need to take.
However the other thing about insurance that you need to remember is that most policies are £6 k in vets fees after which that problem , limb or however they define it as will be excluded so as I am happy to spend £6k So I am in the same place as those who are insured after that.

I use my BHS for public liability but I use Petplan for vet's fees. And that's all - I'm not insured for death, theft or disposal but I trust fate to not do that to me!

I only have BHS Gold for public liabilty insurance... I have a savings account for vets bills. £100 a month goes in there.

But my old arthritic mare is uninsurable anyway, so my savings pay for her Danilon and check ups... Which adds up!!!
