Yes, I part loan/share out my retired competition horse.
He would just be sat in the field otherwise as I don't have time or inclination to hack him out.
I have a lady that rides him 2-3 times a week, she pays for his shoes and he gets a bit more love and attention than he would otherwise.
Finding the right person is the key to sharing but when you do it can work really well.
I have helper with mainly for my older horse - once you find right person it's brilliant, BUT the key is right person. Mine only pays for lessons and diesel, but that cos i don't want any more money, as then i feel people want more of a say in horses management. And than ain't happening.
But it also means can go away at weekends with OH and i know i got some good to do horses instead of paying
I've had 3 helpers so far and they have all been good but it did taken me a long time to find each one (i was very very fussy), as they do have to have same mind set to looking after horses as you do, plus mine need commitment and loyality
I do: My sharer is also on HHO (No doubt she will pop up to put her 2pence worth in on this discussion)
My main reason was that my hours had gone up and I wanted someone to help with the exercising of my mare, I found that because I was not spending enough time riding and that I wasnt able to do the type of riding that I enjoyed when I did ride. I was also feeling that she just wasnt having enough one on one. I have the best sharer in the world (Pause for Twizzels head to explode) she and my mare get on so well, and I can get on safe in the knowledge that she is fit enough to have a jump/ fast hack etc I also get the really proud moments when I give them a bit of a lesson or a few pointers and see everything coming together. A good sharer with a temperament that suits both you and your horse is a must, as is a good agreement that protects both parties, makes them feel safe and defines everyones roles and responsibilities.
Yes, i work full time so, in winter especially, wanted my horse to be ridden during the week and in daylight!! I also needed help at the weekend and didn't want to pay for it or have any random person doing him. He responds better to one on one handling!
So, my sharer does 2 weekdays and 1 day at the weekend - mucks out and rides. She contributes to the cost of having him on livery as well. She is pretty flexible and it really helps take the pressure off me to DIY all the time. She also gets on really well with the horse and has been having lessons to help her improve.
Agree that having the right person is a MUST! And get an agreement to cover both parties. It can work really well for some people, just set the ground rules early as i had a disaster with another sharer!!
I have two people that ride my horse during the week while I'm at uni in Surrey (horse back home in Essex).
My cousin (experienced rider, used to own a horse) rides him twice a week, mainly schooling. She also competes him in dressage, which is good for him as me and dressage don't go together. She pays for his shoes.
My YO's sister (again ex owner) also rides him once or twice a week. She is quite nervous and just likes to hack out round the block.
It works out really well as he gets varied work and I get a happy, fit, schooled horse to ride at weekends. I completely 100% trust both of his riders.
i part loan my friends horse because she was at uni and didnt get much chance to ride, and would rather muck out and mess about with her than ride her, and she needed work and excercise as only 4, anyone in derbyshire needs a rider, pm me
i share a horse. i lost my little old lady in April at the grand age of 28 and didnt know what to do with myself. i didnt really want to be around horses coz it hurt not to be with Shadow, but i was literally going out of my mind by having no contact.
i think the both of us are very happy. the horse, india, is a competition horse and i love riding something so 'capable'. i get a lot out of it, the only struggles i have is the hours i spend at work! i share 2 days a week, one week day and a weekend day. i think the owner is also happy, she was happy to leave her with me for a weekend after about a month, and i've had her for a week to myself and another few weekends and extra days here and there as it suits.
luckily both of us are quite flexible. it started off that the owner needed help of certain days (mum with a 1 yo son, OH, free lance instructor/worker at various yards, generally a very busy lady) so i saved her a couple of hours. coming into winter some of the jobs have slowed off and she's doing more freelance and less yard work, so now i'm just giving her free time.
i don't pay anything, which is helpful to my budget
but i do everything when i have heron those days. i plan to get her a very nice christmas present to say a very big thank you
the owner was working at the yard i kept Shadow on DIY, and saw me ride and the standard of care i gave Shads - i'm the first sharer she's ever had and she was very nervous! luckily its all working out s far
