I have a friend who bought a cocker spaniel puppy to be a gun dog......

however, he has let a gun off near her before now and she is currently 14 weeks old.
He now says she is gun shy with no desire to fetch......... (SUPRISINGLY!)

I know she is old, and slightly past the main training age, but his sister is having a go with her to see if she can cope with her, but in all honesty I cant see it working...............

Would anyone be interested in case I get her passed to me to find her a home?!

Just wanting an idea! She will prob need a lot of work, which I am rather mad at him for! but figured someone on here would be able to do a good job with her!

14 weeks is nothing!! My Mum's dog was gunshy for year or so, he works picking up and beating perfectly now! And Otto was 5 months before his training started.

I'll have her

and my Mum has just said she would love her, or give you a hand with training her (she is 10 miles from notts, if that helps!)

No no no! Sweep wants a little sister if she needs a new home! Otto already has lots of other spaniels to play with!! ;-)

My Mum is a confirmed Working Cocker Addict, and she has a deep seated longing for a Liver Bitch!

But with 6 enitre boys at home I doubt that will happen!!

Otto could have his knackers off though...

She would definately help Lucy with any training though, she got the IWS through his gunshyness!

Otto isn't fussed by guns either, he is going to watch my Dad pigeon shooting soon

My Mum used to walk the IWS near the local Clay Shoot, started off at a distance he was comfortable with, then gradually got closer (back making sure he was never closer than he wanted to be), it took a while but he is fine now.

He was awful, he used to duck and run if he heard gunshot!

If she doesnt go anywhere else, were currently looking for a new addition to the family, to be a much loved pet and keep me company when im at the horses.

*oooh, I wish I could*

I was offered a lab pup the other day, 14 weeks, they paid £700 for it and shall rehome for free if in this area...

anyone who fires a gun around a 14 week old puppy wants shot themselves!

It's just a baby! We don't introduce the gun until at least six months old. Our lab was very gun shy and although keen to retrieve hated the sound of the gun. However we gave her some time and at 2 years old she retrieved her first bird!

The cocker was a different story, picking up pigeons at 9 months and a demon on a shooting day!

The pup just needs some time....

or if they really want rid, give me a shout

I love cockers

For christs sake it's only a few weeks away from mum and there's so many things to do like building her confidence, basic training etc etc. Firing a gun near her at that age is enough to put her off for life..........and the proof is in the story! Hope she finds a good kind home.

Yup, well I agree about being shot near WAAAAAAYYYY too early which made me REALLY mad......
His sister is currently seeing if she can hack it, but if not I will post and let you fight amongst yourselves! I have been told i am number one to be told for her rehoming!
He keeps wanting pitty for "failing" and Im like P*SS off!!! gr just give me the pretty doggy!

Glad to know there are lots of nice wanting homes available for her if the sister gets sick (which I imagine will happen as she kind of got dumped with her......)

Thanks xxx

In one way, I'm not surprised that there's somebody in this world that fires guns around a 14 week old puppy and then categorizes it as being gun shy. But on other hand I'm still shocked to hear about it, if that makes any sense.

Though from when Jonna's puppies was about 4 weeks old last summer, sometimes when they were eating, playing or sleeping, I would put on one of those tapes with the sound of fireworks on that I have or music (mostly Rammstein). But though the sounds of those fireworks sometimes can get really loud and it does sound realistic, it still isn't 100% the same as the real thing (at least not on my old and not very hi-fi sort of apparatus).

Am I to understand that the owner wants pity because he bought a "No good" puppy? To "console" his wounded self-esteem, have you thought about giving him a really huge mirror?
I'm sorry if that was a naughty remark, but I couldn't resist.

Maybe there's puppies with a disposition that can tolerate guns going off near them at 14 weeks of age, but I would still prefer to take it safe and proceed slowly with the training anyway.

That's nothing, my Mother knows someone who set of a starting pistol in the house to see how the pup would re-act
crazy.gif
It's Ok though, because she was at the top of the stairs with the gun and the pup was at the bottom

Surprisingly that pup is also "gunshy"

All I could think of at the time was, what the hell did the neighbours thing was going on!!

Oh really, a start pistol The Henmeister and that puppy also became gun shy?! Wonder why I didn't fall off my chair of surprise by hearing of the outcome... I'm shocked over what some people does, but still not surprised.

Want to take the opportunity to clarify that all I did was have the fireworks or music tape on a little now and then (I also moved the tape recorder around the room a little so that the sound wouldn't always come from the same place), started with low sound level, after that it usually was around a normal sound level, a few times I turned it on loud, but it was still only to get them used to different sort of background sounds and learn them that they didn't have be bothered about it.
And most importantly is that most of the times (and definitely always the first times) the puppies mother was with them, so they could see that Jonna wasn't bothered by it.

Sorry for getting a little off topic, will stop now

. Hope it goes well with the Cocker Spaniel.
