Anyone ridden round Bewl Water??

As title really. Thinking of boxing up and riding round the reservoir.

Anyone ride there regularly, if so any hints and tips appreciated. What's the ground like? Will it be unrideable after all the rain we've had?

Also any other suggestions on places to ride round East Sussex or West Kent appreciated. Have got a pass for Ashdown Forest but not venturing up there until it dries out a bit!

No I haven't, but I'm interested to see your replies as its something I want to try myself.

I think the South Downs are good, you don't need a pass or anything, and there are miles and miles of bridleways. I'm looking forward to going there, too.

I am interested in the responses, too. Bewl is quite near here, so would be easy to get there and it quite appeals!!
 
I rode round it last year, good parking (unless you're me, get lost and end up in a tiny car park somewhere! Did manage to avoid the parking charge though ;)) and nice ride. We stopped at a pub half way round which had a grass area to hang on to the horses so we could have a pint. Can't advise on ground as we went in July and weather was good, it was busy though so can't really go much above trot and there are people/dogs/kids/bikes/buggies so horse needs to be pretty sane!

Yes - many times.
Lovely in the summer and you can stop at pub and/or grab an ice cream :D

It is extremely popular though - so be prepared for many bikes/walkers. Your horse needs to be used to cyclists whizzing up behind you.
 
Agree with Broke but happy about not getting much above a trot, I think we managed to squeeze in a couple of short canters. It was quite busy and people were popping out of the undergrowth, so you needed to be sure that the way was clear before picking up any speed.

Lovely ride, except for one section of road which seemed to go on forever. Not a busy road though, just a country lane.

Definitely worth doing, if only once. Car park attendant really helpful, if I remember correctly they charge per person (unless you can find BBH's car park).
 
I walked it but some areas the path had steps and was very narrow. For those that have ridden it, do yourhorses just cope or is there a different horsey route?
 
I'm guessing it was a different route, I certainly didn't negotiate any steps or particularly narrow paths.
 
Thanks for all the responses!! For those that have ridden it how long did it take (bearing in mind the speed limits!). I know it's 13 miles so 4ish hours??
