Hi
I recently fell off and damaged my hip so I've been looking at motorcycle shorts and snow boarding shorts with protection for hips and coccyx. I wondered if anyone here rode in them and could advise how comfortable they are. Any recommendations would be great too.
Thanks

I have a Joy Riderz, I think they're very good, not that I've fallen off whilst wearing it. I came off my horse a year ago (whilst wearing no protective gear except my hat) and cracked my pelvis - it still gives me jip and now I've bought a HIt air and ride in it all the time.

The motorcycle stuff is intended to protect you from a short distance fall at speed then skidding along an abrasive surface. Bikers don't fall more than about 3'. In contrast a fall from a horse is 6 -8'. Lower speed but with greater impact into another fixed object. And the bike tends not to kick you on the way past - or roll over and fall on you.

There is no doubt that motorbike research has improved safety for horse riders considerably - the air jacket started out as a motorbike thing. And their helmets are still significantly more protective than ours. But the baseline is that the kit is designed to protect against a different mechanism of fall. It won't hurt to wear it. But it probably won't actually make much difference I'm afraid.

I would seriously recommend an air jacket. Mine is hit air which is motorbike technology originally. I fell from a 17h horse onto concrete and walked away with a sore elbow. (Hence I am also now looking at a top with elbow protection which is also motorbike technology!).

I have an airbag but was interested in the shorts because they have pads to protect the side of the hip. I suppose I was hoping that although I am higher than a bike I'm not hitting the deck at 70+ miles an hour so the padding would offer some protection compared to jods alone. Failing that maybe I need hypnotherapy to break my addiction to horses :(

I have the Mountain Horse body protector jacket-it has pads around the skirt etc plus elbow pads, spine and shoulder pads. I don't know how effective it would be (not fallen off in it yet) but its a nice coat to ride in (the come up big as unisex).

I have some jodhpurs with impact protection on the coccyx, hip and knee made by Dainese (who mainly make motorcycle gear). They seem to have stopped making them, but they do turn up on Ebay every now and then - they were called Dainese Ribot, like these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dainese-R...689271?hash=item4d61498277:g:4SwAAOSwtkVZbyZN

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Womens-DA...739288?hash=item238b1c3e18:g:EWAAAOSwzWpZjBg8

Italian sizing is odd - I found the 38 very small, definitely no larger than a UK size 6.

Thanks I'll look into these further
