I am lucky enough to be getting a young Cleveland bay on loan, initially for 6 months, He is 4 this year and was broken in the spring. Will be looking to getting him going in the school and out hacking initially as he has done very little. Anyone own and ride a full cb, and got any tips etc?

My friend has a stud of full Cleveland bays. I ride out with her and her young horse and she's more sensible than mine! Very good out

There are people way more expert than me about CBs on here - I bought my first purebred two years ago, she's currently 5 and I'm just bringing her back into work after a couple of months off due to a minor injury. She was a joy to break in and is being very sensible and willing now.

However, for what it's worth, my advice would be - think forward, be consistent with your discipline (even part breds take the mick if they think they can) and have a great time!

Thanks for the positive feedback, I cannot wait for him to arrive. He seems a pretty laid back chap from what I have seen and for a 4 year old.

It's a shame my friend who owns the stud is not on here, she would be able to tell you so much! Her stallions are so calm and run free with the mares. They are just lovely

Magnetic sparrow- he arrived on the weekend and is a complete sweety; so calm/well behaved. He definitely needs to be taught some manners, like learning to stand still whilst mounting and in general, but is so non-spooky. I have only ridden him 5 times, a combination of lunging/long lining and under saddle, but we have already progressed to walking over poles in the ménage, around scary cones etc, and hacked around the farm. He is much better behaved than a lot of the older horses on livery here. Its a good start, I am so pleased I have been given the opportunity.

I'm pleased it is going well so far. I would recommend starting to discipline any behaviours you don't like straight away. However, mine is currently going through a phase of taking two steps smartly backwards at the mounting block just as I go to get on. I swear that she's smirking when she does it as well.
