Ok so as an injury prone bunch of HHOers I thought you might be able to help me.

2 weeks ago I fell off jumping, I fell to the right but must of managed to get in a tangle because I managed to bend my foot to the outside, spraining the tendons on the inside. I couldn’t walk on it to start with but I can now walk reasonably with it being a bit uncomfortable.

But I have no strength in it, I am supposed to be standing on it for 10s, working up to 50. I can just about manage 10 but if I wobble to the outside I cannot pull it back. I am also supposed to be walking heel toe lines too but look very drunk attempting this.

I managed to ungracefully lever myself into saddle yesterday as I wanted to see how it was in a stirrup, was a little sore but settled. Rising trot is most definitely out of the equation at the mo though and there is only so much of me without stirrups that the pone can take however good it is for my seat (he is very bouncy, I could canter him all day but we really do need to warm up first!)

So any thoughts or tips?
How long till I can manage rising trot/jumping- we can run a sweepstake if you like!

Plan this week is to try and get on most evenings at the very least to walk with it in place for 15-20mins. (pone is being exercised by others)

white magnums and raspberries for those who get to the end, extra cream for those that come up with good suggestions 

give it long enough... don't try to rush it, or you might weaken it long-term, i think. i sprained an ankle very badly years ago (trampolining, oops) and had to get it x-rayed, it was very sore and weak for quite a while, but i was forced to give it long enough and it's been fine ever since. go easy, maybe strap it up with a good elastic support bandage if you are determined to ride?!

Are you having physiotherapy? I'm Queen of ankle injuries, the worst sprain I had took 2-3 months before I could ride again and about a year before it was fully right. However tempted you are get the strength back first before you push it with your riding. Ankles are such evil things if you do them serious damage, its better to give it time to rest.

dwi, I am ignoring your post, months! Am hoping it is not that bad. I did go for an xray to start with as I couldn't put any weight on it and was warned it might take as long to be right as a fracture (apparently you normally break it if it goes that way as the ligaments are shorter on the inside)

I don't think there is any chance of me rushing it, I do listen to pain! But it is much better after I have taken it for a walk and I was told to get on and use it (no specific physio just a lovely leaflet but actually is quite explanatory) . Have it tubigripped unless sat down- though was also told no proven benefit but its more comfortable, very little swelling now and bruising almost gone.

Just very annoying as had just got boy back ready to go out jumping after his shoulder injury in march (hence the agitation) but I will be a good girl honest. - I actually thought it was longer than 2 weeks but when I worked it out it is only that long so shouldn't expect miracles

'don't try and jump corners at home without warning the pony first'

Oh and also have an invite to ride fihunts genie which is of course of utmost importance

slow and steady though methinks, it is going the right way.

i've done that but to the opposite side, mine's the outside. It's been 2 weeks and not a right lot better, doc said it might take 6 weeks and no riding til i've had physio after that. When i move it wrong it 'goes' again and sets itself back to being worse, so be careful you don't just keep prolonging it.

agree with the slow and steady, sounds very sensible.

Hope it's feeling better soon (and mine!!!)

I did mine and good not weight bear at all it just collapsed, quite scary at 14/15!!
Went to hospital and got told a bad sprain was worse than a break, spent a week on crutches then another being slow then carried on. Did get some fab 400g iboprofen
laugh.gif

Did the other one playing netball, carried on playing as no reserve, my GP said that was the best thing to do, so i have had mixed reports, I would now do what your body lets you.
Mine are both still swollen, I am 21 now, and occasionally cause me problems, galloping 5/6 horses in a row with sprenger stirrups last year had me in tears, then had to have strong ankle supports and lots of pain killers to get me through!!

Gosh it must be the week for sprained ankles as Ive done mine too but the other way I think.
I did it 2 weeks ago, vet... yes vet told me to strap it up. He was arround so I asked him lol. I didnt strap it up and did it agian yesterday, so now Im sat here with a purple vet rap on, great for my street cred

The first time I went over on a small grass ledge in the field, I felt sick and at first couldnt weight bear. It swelled up massively but seemed much better after about a week. Yesterday I was walking to the car and just went over! Its so sore and is all bruised and swollen. Vet said they can take weeks to come right.

hope yours feels better soon soo. Mine is definitely improving, I was very slow last week and had a slightly odd wide gate but look pretty normal now and much faster.

i've had a severe sprain due to bolting horse (new horse - first and only time i sat on it at home!).

ankle was still swollen 2 months later so had physio and ultrasound todeal with the scar tissue.

i had consultant's permission to begin riding 6 weeks after i stopped using the cast, but couldn't do rising trot for at least another month.

at the time of the physio, i had lost 10% mobility in that ankle.

regarding the exercise of standing on one foot to rebuild strength. i did this after seeing physio, and use to practice when i was doing the washing up so i had something to grab if needed.

ifound the best thing to help me carry on with everyday tasks was to wear sturdy lace up boots which helped to support my ankle.

the sprain was on the inside of my ankle mostly between the heel and the ankle. it was non weight bearing for a week, and ia had to wear an air cast for 3 weeks. consultant wanted to put me in a plaster cast but i baulked at the idea of not being abel to drive for that long

i was walking happily on it about 4 months later, but could not get normal travel insurance to cover my ankle for 2 yrs.

get washing up

I hate washing up! it does say in quality leaflet to stand near a wall for support!

i was non wait bearing for about 24 hours, cos then i was told it wasn't broken so start hobbling! so it can't be too bad.

Its the first time I have actually injured myself proper falling off so am not used to it!

I tried my boots but the ankle bone on the inside is still pretty tender so anything rubbing on this makes it feel worse than it is.

Am still on the arnica!

started wearing the boots 3 weeks after the fall. until then i had been in the aircast with trainers.

it was my first real riding injury as well after 30 yrs of riding. not good for the confidence when one viewer who had trained at waterstock with Lars Selderholm commented that she hadn't expected me to get up and hobble away from it.

you did well for the first 30, have to say not quite that long. I think am just going to listen to my ankle.

Mine was just one of those falls 9 times out of 10 I would have fallen off in my normal heap (am reasonably well practised!)

Most definately of the utmost importance! And you will need a fully working ankle on the strong baby one!

lol, thats what I said!

Will ride strong baby one when i can effectively ride my spooky old one with stirrups (don't tell him he is old!) and pref manage rising trot. - I shouldn't have accompanied the XC lesson I organised yesterday, jealousy hits!

Ditto giving it time to heal. I sprained mine 15 years ago and was riding daily 4 days later, and because of that it still gives me grief occassionally now.

I twisted mine in the other direction and it did in fact cause a fracture, called an avulsion fracture where the tendon pulls off a fragment of bone. So I was in plaster for 6 weeks. This was 3 years ago and although it's fine in normal use, I can't go jogging, as it sets up an acute inflammatory response that leaves me crippled, by which I mean unable to weight bear at all for over a week.

So the moral is, bad ankle injuries may never go away, you just have to be sensible. I'm sure if I had physio at the time it might have been a different story.

i forgot to say that if you are a skier you may feel discomfort when carving (turning ski by rolling ankle).

it was several ski seasons before i was able to carve for more than a few minutes. even now, 6 ski seasons later its uncomfortable if i do a day carving clinic.

otherwise it is absolutely stable and i can balance on my damaged ankle longer than the good one

I attempted skiing a couple of years back and have to admit its not really my thing (partly cos I was scared of injuring myself and not being able to ride!) so thats not a problem. But thanks for the heads up *thinks good excuse not to have to go again!*
