So great and inspiring to hear! Hope she finds what she wants.Friend is 88. We are planning a horse shopping trip late summer as she wants a new horse (the word unsuitable was used! So I think that means foal - Appaloosa or Arab). She is coming to stay with me later in the year and beach riding beckons.
So sorry to hear that - I feel your pain. Don’t despair though these things have a way of coming right.I was riding everyday apart from really, really bad weather up until last early summer. I am just coming up to 72. I have my retired mare, two donkeys' and my stonking great 17.3 horse of a lifetime that I only bought in July 2019. Unfortunately I had a stupid accident when I was putting one horse out and bringing another in - my fault for taking shortcuts with safety issues in a narrow gateway (i.e don't do as I do, do as I say) Anyway landed on my head on the concrete and son found me there out for the count with the horses grazing happily around me on the grass verges. I was doing everything myself until then, they are all kept out, but now son and husband have to help me out with all that.
I hadn't done too much damage head wise other than concussion but unfortunately stirred up an old back injury and now have difficulty walking or doing anything much . I was just due to go to hospital to have injections into my back to hopefully get me fit enough to ride again and we went into lockdown again so that was that.
The really lovely and kind hearted young lady I bought my big horse from has taken him back to look after him while I try and get well enough to ride again. I am hoping when I have the jabs for covid and so does everyone else I might be able to get into hospital to get sorted. In the meantime I have just taken delivery of a super duper big treadmill to try and get walking again to at least get some fitness level back. I am actually very depressed not riding, I have been riding more or less most days of the week since I was about 3 lol!
Wow what a way to go!Unfortunately passed away now, but one chap near us was still out hunting and working as groom into his nineties.
You can drive a lorry at 70 if you take a test I believe.Im 70 this year with dressage horse and pony at home. Im actively looking for a more fun type at the moment. I have a lesson every week on the dressage horse and stillcompete by my self when we are allowed. My main worry is renewing mydriving liscence this year, as I still want to able to drive my 7.5 lorry.
That core strength issue is certainly a problem for all of us oldies!I am 67 and have 4 ponies and 5 to look after. Still do all the groundwork, field maintenance but dont ride since I smashed my knee and injured my back. Would love to and every now and then sort of biennially I sit on the old girl and have a walk around. Love it at the time but feel very wobbly as core strength and get up and go have got up and gone. Still love working with them and looking forward to seeing Kitten doing stuff. Covid kind of destroyed the reason we bought her as a weanling as the idea was to show her in youngstock classes but we will see we might get a couple in this her three year old year
I know the feeling but sometimes it is a matter of weighing up lack of fun versus lack of energy.I'm in my mid 70's and still ride and compete at both TREC and RC Dressage on my younger horse but she and my retired horse are kept in full livery as I just don't have the skills and knowledge to DIY & never had land to keep a horse at home. And I definitely wouldn't have the energy any more now either!
So I ride about 3 times a week, a mixture of 1 lesson, schooling sessions and hacking. My favourite part of TREC is the Orienteering and when training for that we will go on hacks of around 10 -15 miles. One thing I find now though is, the day after any competition I am pretty tired out and just feel like doing nothing!
