Bought my 4yo at end of may from someone I know who had bought her @ the sales earlier in the year. Breeder was only contact on her passport and by chance today stumbled on an email address for him on a uk website as he is selling a horse at moment. Sent email just looking for her history prior to this year and a couple of photos of her as a youngster if possible. Also put info in on what she's being doing etc. Has anyone successfully gotten info from their horses breeder?

The breeder of my pony has two email addresses and didn't respond to my enquiries :(

I did get some lovely emails and pics from the person who bought him when he was weaned :)

When I used to breed horses, I always sold horses with an "info pack" that included baby pics, pictures of the sire and dam and any siblings. I loved hearing from owners later on in the horse's life (and occassionally DIDN'T love hearing about stories that ended less well, but that's life).

All the breeders ive managed to contact with any of mine have always been happy to give plenty of info & email pics if they have any. Only difference with me is ive always phoned rather than emailed, its easy to read an email & forget about it. I think people rely far too much on texting & emailing these days, a phone call is much nicer :)

I found breeder of my mare on Facebook. I didn't get any pics but did get loads if info re her background, family etc
She also comments everytine a pic goes up which is lovely :)

thats a really good idea :) My boy came straight from breeders so I know everything. However, my old arab loan horse i contacted the breeder and got useful information but then she moved so lost contact.

Yes i have - im in contact with both breeders of my mares and both are in Belgium. Ive been over to see one and ridden my mares Dam :) and they have visited us a couple of times (ok these are private breeders) my other mare was bred on a stud in Belgium and i have constant contact with them also - so dont lose hope :)

Thanks for the replys! Hoping he will also be able to give me some info on her dam ( sire very well known ) as although she is registered can't find any info or pics of her or her breeders details.

I contacted the breeder of my horse for the same reasons, there's loads of info on the net about his sire, but his dam was prooving more elusive. She e-mailed me some photos of his dam and told me a bit about her. I also sent her some photos of my horse and what he'd been up to, which she was grateful to recieve as she'd lost touch of his whereabouts.

Fingers crossed you get a similar response from your mares' breeder :)

Wow Cortez, brilliant. I leave my name and number tucked into the passport and am always happy to help if I can with requests. My last foal is now a 2yo and he's at a wonderful farm. I'm friends with the woman on Facebook and she updates me with pics which I love.

I spent 2 years looking for a horse and finally found him through a friend. I Facebook messaged his owner and she replied straight away and was nice to do so. But no friend request and that was fine. I was just glad he was ok and that he has a good home he's useful in.

Yes, I did, although it was a long time ago!

I wrote to the breeder of my first mare, she was born in Ireland, and i didnt hold out much hope. However I got a lovely letter back with loads of information about my girl, her dam and her sire, and some beautiful photos of my mare as a foal with her dam. I did write back to thank them etc. but never heard from them again.

here are a couple she sent:

Just a day old

and this was here aged 21 two weeks before she was PTS - after 10 wonderful years with her!

I found my future broodmare in an obscure internet ad. She was a bargain price, had the breeding I wanted, from a top stud, but was at the other end of the country. Although I've never met her breeder, I knew her from Facebook, so got loads of info from her about the mare who she'd sold on as a 3yo. Breeder was really, really helpful, as she was keen to see the mare she'd bred going to a great new home. Armed with lots of background info, OH and I decided to make the journey to see her complete with trailer - because I knew that as long as the mare was healthy and sound, that I was going to be bringing her home with me there and then.

Am still in touch with the breeder, who likes to receive updates, 18 months later and although I don't yet know when it will be, but I know that the breeder and I will eventually meet face to face one day!

When I was about 20 I had an ex racer - I got his breeders details and he used to always keep in touch - he'd ring ever new years day - could never tell a word he was saying - very strong irish accent but sent me loads of letters, photos of him when he was younger .... lovely guy :D

The person who I brought my youngster from got me in touch with Enya's breeder.

I'm now friends with both the breeder and person I brought her from on facebook. Both of them have sent me lots of pictures/info and her breeder even sent me they clay inserts she had done of Enyas feet when she was foal :)
Both of them keep in touch for progress updates as well.

I managed to get in touch with my girls breeder in Holland after a lot of internet searching! She was delighted to hear how she was getting on although sad to hear how I had acquired her and the state she was in. The breeder has a real passion for this line of horses and her knowledge is incredible and has been very helpful. Photos of her dam and relative were lovely to see and it's always nice to share our achievements with the breeder.

I spent years trying to find my first mare's history, to no avail, before then bumping into her breeder by chance at a sale. We're good friends to this day :)

I'm trying to put people in touch with the breeders/previous owners of their horses through my work with STAGBI. Only this week I passed the contact details of an owner onto the breeder of her horse, and they are both absolutely chuffed to be getting info from one another!

I contacted the Irish breeder of my ISH/warmblood via email, and he was very pleased to hear from me and now follows our progress and results. He's also sent some pics of him as a foal - which is lovely to have.

I have also been in touch with the lady that bought him from the breeder and backed him, who also follow his progress now.

He was then sold on again at least another three times, but I've no idea what happened in that time until I bought him as a six-year old last year.

It's nice to know that their breeders are still interested though!

I've had no luck contacting my horse's breeder. He's a 13yo ex racer, bred in ireland. I've found one pic of his sire and have gone through 23 generations on that side but would love to see what the dam looks like. Mainly though I'd like to see a photo of him as a youngster and a bit more info on his short lived racing career. Unfortunately can't find the breeder through google :(

We got in touch with Spud's breeder and ended up with pictures, information and a very good friend out of it. Oh and we ended up with Spud's full brother too.....

yes I have! I traced nearly all of his previous owners (lots of them despite being only rising 5!) I wrote to them asking for phone numbers/responses and traced them on facebook and through related message boards. It's been lovely piecing together my ponies past and a build up a picture of his character.

I currently have his breeder on facebook who is always commenting on our outings and photos and I think he likes to know how his prefixes are going! I've managed to get pictures of him going through the sales, a picture of his mum and his offspring and foal pictures of him. I think it was quite easy as he's a welsh cob and there seems to be quite a good community of enthusiasts who are happy to help and of course everyone knows everyone!

I worte a letter to Alfie's breeder explaining where I'd bought him, what I was doing with him and how amazing he is. A month later I received a beautiful handwritten reply, which was enclosed with photos of his mum (NF x TB), his dad (whose mum was an appy x anglo arab and dad a blue and white ID). There were photos of his half sister (same Dam) his grandparents on dads side, photos of him being driven (I never knew he was trap broken!) and his daughter and granddaughter!

Effectively, I have pics of his entire family and learned a lot about his past. It was a real eye opener, that's for sure! I hadn't known he was used as at stud til he was 4 (tho I knew he was a false rig), or that he was only about 10% appy (he's marked like one, shaped like one and acts like a total DQ).

With the shetland we found out that the 16yr old "been everywhere done everything" first pony (you know, the one we had jumping five days a week on working livery) was actually given away free to a good home, untouched and unbroken only days before I bought her. I swear we'd never have known if it wasn't for the breeder.

Really, really helpful in both cases. I don't suppose others are so lucky but we've had great results just from asking.

I traced my geldings breeder in Belgium by googling his name on the passport and found an email address. I exchanged emails a few years ago and he gave me some history and said would send me a photo. I didn't get a photo and I didn't follow up again until this year and he sent me a couple of photos. I was chuffed to see his baby pic even though it's not the best :) .

Then - as a foal and breeder riding him as a young horse.

Thank you kellybee :)

I was really lucky - I had my camera with me as the bluebells are so amazing and then I took a chance and asked some random woman taking photos in the woods to take a photo using my camera. Turned out she ws doing a photography course so I was lucky she had a good eye.
