Anyone suffering or have suffered with a tennis elbow from riding? if so I'd be grateful if you can you give me some advice.

I seemed to have acquired one, well about a month ago and it is slowly getting worse....my fault I know because I've not rested it and continued riding but I really have no option!!!

So does an arm brace help? or do I need to stop riding for a month to let it heal completely?, will it go on its own? does it get any worse to the point where I won't be able to use my elbow at all for such things as riding/lifting/driving?

At the moment I can use it, ride with it, but afterwards I seem to feel the ever increasing damage the next day as it stiffens up, or gives way if I do something simple like lift a cup of coffee up off my desk, or straighten it and and bend it etc.

I've always been the sort of person to just 'put up and get on with' kinda thing as last time I damaged my ankle, got it infected and couldn't walk on it, it was like a lead balloon but I still managed to squeeze my joddy boots on (which was like giving birth!...I'm guessing

) and ride, people on the yard said I was mental but had to keep on top of things with my youngster, now you can imagine the pain when my instructor grabbed my ankle and to turn my foot in to alter my leg position!...I could of screemed blue murder

..(he'd of never agreed to my lesson if I'd told him! lol)

Anyway...suggestions please.

Yes I did, My old horse was a demon jumping and would tank for britain - safely but so strong. He would give me tennis elbow in both elbows in the summer months. I had to wear elbow supports for jumping and competing with magnetic ones on there at normal times. I have found him to be the only horse that has ever done it to me - but he is the only one I haven't broken so my other horses don;t seem to get so strong. Moving to a stronger bit may help you - it didn't me as he only went well in a straight bar vulcanite pelham - everything else made him even stronger. And don't fight him if you can avoid it at all. I found I could hack him o his own and he was never strong - but in company he had to win. So when my arms were sore we hacked alone.

I never had the steroid injections in my elbows as i managed to keep the pain under control just by alternating the disciplines. So hack on my own or flatwork rather than jump.

Ibuprofen is fantastic stuff for the pain.

I've not suffered tennis elbow but I do suffer from swimmers shoulder I think it is! I've been to see many specialists all of whom have told me that the only cure is six months complete rest. Obviously I've never actually tried this! Have you tired sports therapy massages? I've got a great sports therapist and she is the reason I'm still able to ride and manage the pain. Far better than a normal physio as sports therapists understand that you don't want to rest etc. The other thing you could try is approaching your doctor - they might recommend a course of voltrol (sp?) or diclofenac (sp?) which is a prescription strength ibuprofen. When my shoulder flares up I take a course for three weeks and it really settles it. Good luck.

Thank you bosworth and marchtime,

Well I'm baffled now because my horse is not strong, not in the slightest, I've rode strong horses before but never suffered with a tennis elbow (may I'm just getting old lol!), even my last boy that I used to hunt (I had to peel my fingers apart very slowly once we'd finished as he was taht strong!) never got a tennis elbow... hmmm how strange

, only thing I can think off is I did a mare jumping just over a month ago and although not strong she can avaid a bit and tank off to the side sometimes perhaps I should of warmed up more, might of done it then or pulled it without noticing and aggravated it ever since by riding perhaps.

Oh well if you see someone jump out of horse box busting some strange arm movements moves ...big box little box..etc etc

its just me warming up before i warm the horse up!

I'll try one of those brace things, do tack shops sell them if its a common thing, never noticed before.

I have had tennis elbow for the last 4 months, don't know how it happened, just seemed to be there one day. Riding doesn't seem to bother it, the worse horsey job seems to be poo picking with the scoop/rake thing. I like you have just put up with it an I do think it is getting slightly better but even things like lifting the kettle have to be thought about with already bent elbow, held close to body etc.
I have thought about getting a strap as I can imagine it would work as if you grip the tendon where the strap would be you can actually lift things easier.

Isn't it housemaids knee instead of tennis elbow.......from being on your knees scrubbing floors many years ago????

I get tennis elbow (or golfer's elbow, I forget which is which).

You need to go to a physiotherapist and ask for a 'forearm strap' - you can buy them over the counter. It goes round your forearm (d'uh) just below the elbow, and adjusts the joint so the joint itself is rested. They really do work, I know, I have one!

TE can take months and months to resolve especially if, like normal mortals, you cant rest it completely. Be prepared for the long haul. Ibuprofen and painkillers will help as will the brace however you should only wear it when you are actually using the arm and not all the time.

I had Tennis Elbow for years and a combination of resting it when I could plus Ibuprofen helped and then I got a Bioflow bracelet and it worked wonders I used to wear it all the time but now only if I get a twinge and my Tennis elbow was so bad I used to cry!

I had TE, It is very annoying. The strap helped, because it limits a tendon movement that is being irritated when touching that "little bone" in the elbow.
I kept riding and doing everything else. After a couple of months had no more pain. It kept coming back every year but, had no more for these past three years.
Yes, very annoying. Hope you heal soon!!

Where can you buy the Bioflow bracelet from? Boots? I've had it now since end of last year and I am in a lot of pain with it, but have to admit havent been taking the painkillers, but I am sure gonna have to start!

I got it and traced it back to 2 things - using a long handled pitchfork in a very wet and dirty mare's straw stable and also the poo picker.

I switched back to using the standard garden fork length fork for mucking out and made an adaptation to the handle on the rake part of the poo picker. I bound the handle part with an old tail bandage, so that the handle became rugby ball shaped, but still comfy in my hand rather than too big and then taped it over with insulation tape.

I am absolutely delighted to report that since I did these 2 things, I don't suffer any more with this incredibly painful affliction. The support band thingy does help, but more in a relief way than cure. I found the pain agonizing and very restricting.

But if your horses are on full livery, then I have no constructive suggestions to make as to how you got it, or how to try and get rid of it. Good luck though, TE is more painful than childbirth I think. I hope you can find something to make it better.

Yep ditto this. I had one and it got better while I was still using it. The strap takes the pain away completely although I think they work by stopping the muscle contracting as much as normal thereby letting the tendon/ligament heal.

I think I got mine from the shavings fork rather than riding though!
