I am looking to move my horse down to Surrey (Leatherhead/Dorking way) and wondered if anyone knew of a nice livery yard (part livery)-where the people who run it aren't nuts, its professionally run but friendly and not bitchy?!! I would need all year turnout and prefer not to have to go on the roads to hack as my mare can be a bit funny in traffic? There seem to be a lot of yards listed but where do you start?! word of mouth seems the best bet

Mine is really great - we're in Chessington / Claygate. PM me if you want details. 24 hour turnout if you want it. 2 surfaced schools; jumping and dressage. Jumping one is floodlit. Horse Walker. Washroom. Parking for lorries etc - not in the congestion zone. You do have to do a bit of road work to get to off road hacking though - but nothing too busy. There's a bridle path alongside the busy bit, but then a little bit of residential roads to reach a large network of bridleways. No bitchyness at all - we've been there about 3 years. Great crowd. Brilliant YO - and a farrier on site! DIY, part and full livery available. Can't speak too highly of it.

Hello. I am at a fab yard near Great Bookham, Chalkpit Farm Stables. We're a really friendly bunch, probably spending more time chatting over a cup of tea than actually riding. You're right word of mouth is best and I've been at Chalkpit for a number of years. I often work away so need someone I can trust with my horse. lots of off road hacking too

Thanks Shay but the road work is a problem sadly -I used to be at another yard before and all we had to do was hack across one road and down a residential road to get out onto the common and she was so unpredictable -even with parked cars -spooking and messing around - I just dont want to risk it. My mare is now 11 years old and has always been a bit skittish -so I don't want to endanger myself or anyone else to that matter by taking her on any roads but thanks for your post -sounds great!

Hi Ya,
thanks for your post - sounds fun! what do you and the other liveries get up when you do actually ride? does anyone compete -I do a bit of dressage and showing and also to hack out do I have to go on any roads? (its proving a nightmare having a non-traffic proof horse!)
thanks

We are a of mix of liveries - some of us dressage, showing, and happy hackers. We've got a huge school 20*60 which is great for practising in. We often to go out together to local shows and everyone is always supportive of each other. There's always someone to hack with either one of the liveries and one of the staff are always willing to hack out with you. There is a pathway next to the road to get onto the bridleway but it's less than a minute - you don't have to actually go on the road. Let me know if there is anything else you want to know.

thanks cobsmother - sounds really nice and un-usual from most yard experiences that I have heard! as I said to Shay my mare is a nightmare with traffic so is the bridleway right next to the road in the sense that you have to walk past the traffic with it directly next to you? my worst fear is her swinging her bum out onto traffic or leaping side-ways in front of a car and they go so flipping fast anyway -despite my attempts at wearing fluro head to toe
Do they turn out all year around and I mean all year around? I was at one yard who said they did then when I moved there they turned around everytime it was wet and said they were to stay in - my mare is quite fresh so I really need her to go out in the field everyday -also I dont want her turned out with anything else -do they offer this at your yard?

I LOVE my yard!! I'm in Cobham. Have been there for 7 years and wouldn't dream of moving my girlie. Really friendly YO, all year turn out. My girl is a right plonker with roads and we only have a quite one to walk down then hours of hacking! Indoor and outdoor schools. All year turnout. Horses can live out in the summer if you wish. small paddocks available If you need limited grazing or waiting for farrier ect. YO lives on site. PM if you need any other details. xx

There's no danger of your mae leaping into the traffic. The short stretch is set back of the road and there's a fence between the track and the road. I often take my mare out in hand and she can often dance down the road but we go throw the track quite safely.

Yes there is all round turn out and it does mean all year turn out. The only time they didn't go out this year was when we had all the snow back in February. The horses go out for half a day, either with a friend or on their own. we do have a number of fresh horses on the yard but they seem to settle in to the routine quickly. Because they actually go every day they are quite calm

thanks Kafue sounds great - glad I am not the only one with an idiot horse! I need to speak to my other half about what we can afford to spend on the 'love of my life' as he calls my mare, before I start looking around at places - also ideally I wanted to be more Leatherhead/Dorking way as its enroute to work, but dont know if prices all the same or vary area to area and also its about getting the right place for my mare as well, so may will PM you for further info etc -thanks for your post

thanks Cobsmother - as long as there is a solid object between us and cars then I can cope with that and yes I agree there is a fine line between wanting your horse turned out in 7 feet of snow or not and I would say not! thats great that they can go out individually and half day turnout is not a problem for her as when she has decided she has had enough, she starts pratting around and doesnt stop until she has either fallen over or crashed into the gate, so half a day every day is fine -plus she would be ridden most days anyway. As I said to Kafue I need to discuss funds with him indoors, however you are in the area that I wanted to be in so may very well PM you if thats OK -thanks

There's a new livery yard set up near me. Previously polo yard, but they're expanding. They're in Coldharbour and are on the byway, so you are off-road from setting off. I think the email is livery@crockhamfarm.co.uk

Couldn't tell you what it's like, though, as it's too new and I just keep mine nearby. They turn out the polo ponies all year, though.
