Anyone taken a riding hat through an airport?

Daughter is about to fly out on a riding holiday. She only wants to take a carry on bag but if she puts her riding hat in it, it will take up most of the room. Will she get away with clipping it to the outside of the bag and maybe wearing it through boarding? It’s a long haul flight so they probably won’t be so precious about cabin space.

Shouldn't be an issue. Any time I've flown long haul I've had a cabin bag and a small extra bag so I wouldn't see this as any different, though could depend on the airline bag policy.

When I've flown ba they've been very strict about hand baggage size and I've always packed ski helmets inside my bag.

I travel with mine regularly but do usually put it in my carry-on bag and just put things inside it to use the space. I do know that people sometimes clip it on and get away with it too but can't say for sure if that would work. Have definitely never needed to wear it to board! I've managed a BP inside my hand luggage before too, if she fits things around the hat and inside it I think she'll find it OK inside the bag.

When buying in Ireland we have just clipped to outside of hand luggage. Never had a problem and that’s with RyanAir. I’m planning on hand luggage only when I go training over in Portugal this month.

I put mine inside my carry on bag and padded it well so it didn't take up much space. Could always wear it!

Like the others, mine travels in hand luggage - I wouldn't trust it to hold baggage, the way the bags get thrown around! I'd be surprised if you would be allowed to wear it in the airport - certainly not through the scanners....

I travel BA and easyjet with mine clipped to the outside of my bag through security ect.
sl-easyjet find any excuse to charge you for more than 1 bag so I *did* wear mine to board just in case.

Wear and then run around screaming whilst clutching at the straps ????

NO! Definitely don't do that! You will probably get arrested by airport police but it would be funny ??

On one trip I wore it to get through boarding gate - some odd looks but worth it!

On another I packed it in my hold, well cushioned and full of socks!
