I am contemplating taking horsey out to an indoor tomorrow (thanks for all the suggestions of indoor)

Anyway, the roads all the way to indoor are clear
except the lane from my yard to the main road which is icy. It's about 500m long and quite icy but normal cars are going over it without probs. I have a discovery so obviously can cope with it! But with a trailer is a bit different.

So, has anyone else been out? Or would you risk it?

Personally I wouldn't tow on an icy road - all it takes is for the horse to shift suddenly and you could lose control of your trailer.

agree

Personally I wouldn't chance it in my lorry - dont know much about trailers...I am waiting to move my horse to a new yard but wont get the lorry out of the yard at the moment so going to have to wait until all the snow melts...our lane is like an ice rink and if yours is anything like ours then I would say dont take your trailer along there with horse in it...

Wouldnt risk it either or at least take trailer to end of road and find a safe place to load horse after if thats possible? I got caught in the 1st lot if snow before xmas, was towing my horse back from loan home when blizzard started and by the time I left the motorway to normal roads it was awful! Although we got there safely, no skids, near skids etc it was VERY VERY scary :-( Luckily the horse was very good at travelling and the trailer was lightweight so just went with the car but id never want to do it again far too stressful!! know your only going a short distance on the ice but the stress of it will probably ruin your day!

Saw a trailer on its side last week, tho it was one of the Ifor silver metal looking ones, I think used for sheep. Not very big and the road wasnt particuarly ice/snowy. Saw men looking through the side slats as if trying to see it what was inside was ok, it was dark so I dont know. Wouldnt chance it and its not you, its other drivers too. If they lose control atall you have not a lot you can do.

It's not worth the risk

all it takes is the slightest shift of the horses weight and you could loose controll.

I wouldn't - particularly as it could snow when you are actually at the venue and then you will be really stuffed!

Its frustrating as hell not being able to ride isn;t it - but not worth the risk of towing a trailer in ice or snow.

My trailer has got cobwebs in it its been sat in the yard for so long!!

I was supposed to be boxing my horse to her new yard on thurs but decided it wasn't worth the risk, and that was a box not a trailer. Just not worth it IMO

I've had the trailer out this week, Monday and Tuesday, and moved seven horses. The roads we used whilst there were horses in the trailer were clear.

The (very long) drive that I took the trailer up and down (without horses) was icy - we slid into a speed bump

.

I was driving a Disco.

Having lost control of my 4x4 on black ice on Xmas day, there is absolutely no way I would attempt to take my trailer out. Although it's frustrating not to be riding and watching all the carefully built muscle and fitness disappearing, we're all in the same boat and it's not worth taking unneccessary risks.

Not worth the risk. I've been waiting since Tues after Christmas to drive my trailer the 300 mile round trip to Yeovil to pick up 2 rescue shetlands. The main roads are fine but it's the last mile or so each end that's the problem. And as people have said, one shift of weight or stretch of sheet ice and you could end up with a trashed trailer, trashed horse and trashed you!

As frustrating as it is, I agree with all the others. Our roads in the far South West are all pretty good apart from the farm lanes and tracks, that are packed solid with ice. We were due to take the lorry on a long trip yesterday but didnt dare risk taking the lorry along the mile of lane before the main road due to the ice. I was not happy but hey ho we are all in the same situation.

Thanks for all your advice.

I did forget to say that I am in Cheshire and we haven't had any snow since tues and no snow forecast today. Think things are much worse down south.

I have decided to take the trailer for a test run without horse and then see what I think. I have checked with the indoor and they said roads are clear to them.

No way on this earth would I risk it. There's always another day. However the trailer is empty it could be completely different when fully laden. Sorry for negative post.

Thanks VictoriaEDT!!! Just me fretting that the ponies will end up where they were going to end up if I can't get down there soon. Unasked, I sent livery money to cover the cost of keeping them. Molly's stable has been ready since Xmas but remains stubbornly empty

Well I did last Tuesday to collect a poor filly running on the forest who needed to come home for some TLC. I was going to do it this weekend, but then decided with the weather forecast that Tuesday was my window of opportunity, which it certainly was in hindsight!

I came back in failing light with snow falling as I got closer to home, apart from one scary moment having to go up and down a couple of single track steep hills with sheet ice on them, it was OK. Of course, there wasn't the ice about then that there is now. There is no way I'd even contemplate it presently.

its not worth it! we was meant to be moving ours last week, all the roads are fine apart from our yard drive way,but the trailor wouldnt pull over the ice without slipping without anything in so we just didnt bother, hurry up and go away snow!
