Husband is about to get the 2l AWD version, for which the maximum braked towing weight is listed as 2100kg. So I know that legally/technically it could tow my Ifor 505 and two ponies (total weight less than 1900kg) However, the practical safety and the feeling it gives to tow is not at all the same as the maximum weight allowed, so am interested to hear anyone's opinions of it as a tow vehicle...
Cheers!
ETA - He doesn't have a choice of vehicle, so don't worry about other recommendations :)
Also - yes, I have a B+E license :)

Can't give you any advice on towing but I have had my 2L Kuga for 3 months now and I love it ...

I think you would need to get the trailer downplated, as the car should be able to tow the MAM not the actual weight.

My friend tows an Ifor 505 and large warmblood with her Kuga so total weight approx 1600kg. She loves it.
No need to downplate trailer, car does not need to tow the MAM under B+E licence rules.

I know it's 3 years ago ! But did u ever pull the 2 ponies with the Kuga ? I've got the exact same set up and was wondering exactly the same as you was !

I have a 2017 2L AWD and tow an Ifor 505 with it. It tows my 510kg horse really nicely (although my husband says it always looks quite low at the back of the car/front of the trailer due to soft shocks/springs/something? where it's meant for school runs not towing!) and don't really notice I'm towing. I haven't towed a huge amount with it (not out every weekend or anything more's the pity) but it sailed through all services and it's first MOT so I obviously haven't destroyed it by towing!

When I first got it I had two ponies, and I did do a lot of math, weighbridged the ponies and kit etc, and legally it could tow the lot (with a decent safety margin too). I only once actually towed them both (pony was about 430kg from memory), just a couple of miles at a max of 40mph roads and no significant hills, and decided I'd never go further. It just felt over-burdened, and I wouldn't have liked to test the stopping power. The contrast to towing them both behind an old Ford Ranger was vast.

Hope that helps!

PS - excuse me being one of those lurkers that barely ever posts - but thought I could genuinely add some useful input here! And Mandi1 agreed lol!

Thanks that helps alot . I'd probably take my 14hh Welsh cob (400/450,kg) and at a push my friends section b but I think her Connemara and my Welsh would test the hills where we live to much !
