Anyone towed with a Ford Mondeo??

Seen a nice 2.0tdci estate for sale.....towing capacity 1800kg, fine for my Ifor 505 plus my welshie....soo piddled off with 4x4's I don't go off road and only tow once or twice a month...
 
I havent but a couple of my friends do , they really rate them as great towing cars for just 1 horse
One tows a cheval trailer with 1 large horse & says it tows like a dream , much better than the santa fe they had before

I did once or twice. Single 13.3hh lw pony. Mondeo was the only option as 4x4 had died immediately before. It was a 1.8 petrol. Checked the route it was mostly flat. It couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and at Deeside? college it nearly died trying to get over the uphill speed bump on the way out of the drive. Very embarrassing. Definitely a diesel with a bigger engine would be adequate.

I tow with our focus estate 2l tdci. Lower towing capacity of 1500kg but works well with single Ifor and 14hh pony.

Eta- ours is diesel
 
I used to tow my mare all over the place with a diesel mondeo - trailer was a rice with wooden floor to so not the lightest! I would get laughed at turning up at shows until she came out, won some classes and shut them up!
 
If you tow mainly on level roads, you should be fine. Hill starts with a front wheel drive car are always interesting.

We have a 56 plate 2.0 TDI diesel Mondeo estate, tow limit 1800 kg. It tows my Ifor 510 and one horse ok (but we only use it if the Shogun is unwell). I'd recommend putting rubber dampeners on the rear springs, they are cheap and easy to fit, and it hugely improves the handling when loaded.
 
For years my tow vehicle was a RWD Sierra estate (forerunner to the Mondeo) or a p100 truck (pickup with a Sierra body). That was with a very lightweight trailer and one Arab up, well within weight limits. Honestly, it was fine, and we went up and down dale. I did tow with an anti snake bar though.

I then got my landie, which was another fairly cheap way of towing - the non turbo 90s are in one of the lowest insurance brackets and will get you about 25mpg. The only drawback is that they are sloooooow. I've sold her now to a young driver just starting out with a trailer, so hopefully she will give her the independence she gave me - it means she hasn't got the exorbitant insurance bills that she would have with other 4x4s. I was dead proud when they came to their first ride last month.
 
I've towed with both a Mondeo and an Insignia. Both 2lt TD. Both towed amazing and are super family cars with great mpg. That was towing 1 very large (17.3hh WB) in a mare & foal Cheval Liberte trailer (just wider than a single). Towed fantastic!
 
I used to with a 2l, lightweight trailer and 1 small horse. I was ok on normal roads but reluctant to go near a motorway as I didn't feel I had enough car weight to stop quickly if I needed to. Also I eventually blew the head gasket as they aren't really designed for it. If you get one swap it every 2 years before the extra wear and tear starts showing and don't buy a 2nd hand one more than a year old or that already has a tow bar.
 
Had to tow the pony with one once (400kg and ifor 505) was ok on the flat but in 1st gear up hill. Also I would be worried about getting stuck when parking without the option of 4x4.
Have also used a Subaru estate(h6 version y reg so not new) this felt a lot tougher and more powerful than the Mondeo and still has the 4x4 option.
I felel that cars don't feel as "safe" to tow with as larger 4x4 does.
