I'm considering trying hypnotherapy to try help me calm my nerves and stressing when show jumping. I wondered if anyone has tried it, and does it work or not?
Or has anyone tried a sport psychologist?
Really desperate as sj in bad state, and its all in the mind!

Thanks

Yes and its very good. I have a friend who can do a lot over the phone and email as well, she's a hypnotherapist but does different things as well, specialises in horsey people PM me if you want me to put you in touch.

Hi i used the confident rider series Showjumping cd in conjunction with rescue remedy, it works very well.
I used to get terrible nerves before my weekly lesson on my horse as my instructor started to get us to jump, I used loads of rescue remedy and started to listen to the cd, i found it very good and got to the point where i was actually jumping albeit little 1ft 6 jumps inbetween my lessons and enjoying it!!! For the cost of a cd its well worth it

Ummm - the thought crosses my mind that if a rider is SO nervous they need hypnotherapy before competing.. why do it? If you're, with all due respect, a pleasure rider, rather than a professional, I can see little fun in scaring yourself senseless and probably passing that fear onto your horse, thereby creating a vicious circle of tension. I'd try and find another discipline...... what about dressage? However good luck and best wishes and I hope you find your confidence a.s.a.p.

I'm an eventrider and do it for a living, I'm not scared of jumping as such i'm dreadfully competitive and have a lot of pressure on me and just need help in dealing with the stress and I'm not that keen on sj it's my worse faze and just want some help on trying to chill out. My horse doesn't have a problem with my nerves from jumping, it's just me worrying that i'm not riding him the best I can, and I put a lot of pressure on myself because he is so talented and will go very far.
Thats why i'm looking into hypnotherapy.

Ah, now I see why a sports psychologist might be able to help. It worked wonders for Pippa Funnell! Can't really suggest anything other than perhaps to try to keep in the back of your mind that, even though you do this professionally, it's even better when you enjoy what you're doing. Good Luck.

You should try a sports psychologist if you have the chance. I know quite a few very successful riders who have taken advantage of such help not so much because they couldn't cope but because the wanted to do better. Rather like continuing to take lessons - it doesn't mean you have a problem, it only means you want to improve.

I suspect if you talked to someone you'd find out your concerns are pretty common and there are some very proven ways of dealing with them.

I'm the producer of the Confident Rider Series and the feedback I get from clients is very positive. The only time there may be a continued problem is when riding or competing on a horse that really isn't safe, because no matter how hard you try and change the subconscious mind to think positively, to enable the rider to remain calm, relaxed and focused, if the horse is actually dangerous, the instinct to survive will always overrule - and this is how it should be, the flight or fight instinct is there for our benefit, to keep us alive, but sometimes this reaction becomes over-active, or over- sensitive, or over-stimulatedand, and this can be helped greatly with calming/relaxation techniques, such as those used in Hypnotherapy.
