Hi,
My mare gets a cough and has thick white mucus coming out of her nose if I don't steam her hay every night so I am considering putting her on a supplement to hopefully help with this. As even non dusty hay sets her off, it would be great to get her to be a bit more tollerant to dry hay.
Has anyone had a problem similar to this and tried a supplement to help? Which did you try and how was it? I have had her checked by the vet so am happy that there is no worrying underlying problem causing this, she is just rather sensitive.
Thanks loads for your help!

Is the rest of her stable environment low dust? Used to keep my mare in a yard where one of her neighbours were on straw and the stables themselves were old and rotten so there was always dust/spores in the air. This type of horse does much better on mats/minimal bedding, and since moving to this regime she is soooo much better.
I have used NAF respirator and it is quite good - they also have a liquid version for acute symptoms which is worth trying but for long term treatment Secreta Pro is better and cheaper. We get it from our vet but think you can get it online too.

Hi,
Thats really handy thanks,
They are stone stables and washed and repainted each year, and she is on rubber mats and dust free shavings - so her stable environment is pretty dust free. The change of routine with her hay is the only thing that seems to affect her. I would go to haylege but it turns her into a mad thing, she really doesn't need the extra calories!
I shall look into the Secreta pro, I haven't heard of that so will read up on it. I think she will need something long term as steaming her hay for a few months doesn't seem to allow her to build up any resistance to getting bunged up if she goes to dry hay for a day or too - I tried this to see if she just needed a break to get more tolerant.
Thanks guys!
