As title really. New cob has had injections for mites and I have tried all the usual remedies. She improved after the injections but is now biting and stamping again. She is quite sensitive so cannot use pig oil and sulphur for example.

This is quite expensive so wondered if anyone else had tried it before I take the plunge. It is a herbal thing you add to their food which makes the horses blood unpalatable to the mites. Apparently works for flies, too.

mmmm... yes I've seen these adverts on FB.

Yes it is expensive, bleddi expensive. If I was spending that sort of money I'd need some scientific proof that it is indeed effective, and has been proven to be so.

Wonder if there is any veterinary support or recommendations for this product?

My vet suggested to get some bog-standard Frontline spray and use that in the heel/fetlock area; OR to get one of the flea-collars that you can get for dogs, and put that around the legs (one for each leg, obviously!!). But if yours is sensitive, I'd ask your vet before you do this.

OP-I don't know about this particular product, but there's a big push right now to control mite infestations using systemic methods-either via vaccination or by delivery of oral compounds. Volatile substances (such as essential oils) do deter mites but by their very nature, don't last long. How delivery via this route works in horses or whether it's effective, I don't know. There are synthetic compounds that have some effect on poultry red mite for example, when delivered through hen's drinking water. I'd be asking them if they had done any research/trials on efficacy and their results on safety, which they claim to have tried as its worth stating that many essential oils are quite toxic at the right concentration. (fwiw I work in vet ectoparasitology-specifically different kinds of mites for the last 11 years)
 
Thank you both for your responses. I will email them and see what they say. The literature (for what it is worth) says it is non toxic. At that price I was more concerned with efficacy!
MoC what interesting work! mites are such awful things. It would be great if there were a vaccine. This little mare has the best feather of anything I have had and I would hate to remove it but I think I might have to. Luckily she would look nice hogged. I think my next step will be to get the spray and patch test it. If OK I will get the clippers out and then try it. I think a spray would be a waste of time otherwise. There is skin in there somewhere but not easy to get to.
 
I've a Fell who's had mites. We had the jags but then they revisited. I shampooed him with neem and rosemary shampoo thoroughly and then treated with Frontline spray twice over two weeks.Currently I am treatment 2 of LimePlus Equine Dip-which kills mites on contact and stops the flaky skin that mites cause and love to live in (there is a study published on it and they had good results). We'll see how it goes! He's not itchy or stomping/biting his feet atm.

Thanks for that. Did the spray not work at all? I have seen the limeplus and was interested. Do you think an ordinary patch test would be adequate to make sure she is ok? I would hate to put anything on that will cause her more of a problem than she has already. Presumably with a Fell you don't have too much feather - have you left it on? I would be really interested to know how this goes. I also wonder what it would do for mallanders. Not problem with this mare but it is with the other one.
 
Yes, I think the spray worked but wanted to double whammy it. You have to do it twice to get the hatching eggs. I won't take off his feather. The limeplus seems to be well tolerated but it does need using as per instructions as it's potent stuff-I always patch test with everything.
