Anyone up for helping with a bit of horse shopping?

Had a slightly disappointing end of the week/weekend in terms of horse shopping with ponies not as described and a seller who seems to have changed her mind about selling. So I was hoping to maybe get a bit of help with horse shopping!

I'm aware I'm looking for something quite popular, so it is tricky, and I've spoken to a lot of my horsey contacts already to see if they know of anything for sale locally that isn't being advertised.

I'm after:

14-15hh, but would consider smaller if chunky or slightly bigger if fine.
At least 6, and probably no older than about 14.
Mare or gelding.
I'm not especially keen on very chunky coloured cobs, or TBs, but I would consider them if everything else was perfect!
Something sane and sensible for a small adult (late 20s) who's worked with horses in the past and had loans as a teenager, but never owned my own horse!
Must be safe to hack alone- hacking includes crossing one major road, but otherwise on quiet lanes.
Can be green in the school, and doesn't have to be especially talented in terms of jumping (popping a small cross pole or a log out hacking is about the limit of what I want to jump these days!).
After something that would be easy to manage so no laminitics/sweet-itch etc.
Would be kept on individual turnout and stabled at night in winter, so would need to be able to cope with this.

I've got a budget of £5000, could possibly go slightly higher for the right horse/pony.

I'm based in West Cornwall, so the closer edge of Dorset and Somerset would be about my limit for viewings at the moment!

If anyone knows of anything or has any advice, then please let me know!

There’s a 14.2 Connemara gelding aged 12 on our yard under your max budget...but we re a looong way from you....Stirling.

Realistically, I'm not brave enough to buy unseen, but I'm a teacher so if I haven't found something by October half term I'm considering a horse shopping trip around the UK- but I imagine he'll be snapped up by then.

Most of our larger natives would fall into your wish list categories. I'd suggest you go on breed society pages and look on their sales list or contact breeders who might have something not advertised or know of one. There's a very nice Fell mare on the breed page, too far for you in Cumbria but might give you some ideas.

I've been keeping an eye on breed society pages, but it seems to be mainly youngsters/unbacked ponies coming up? Or else miles and miles away from me.

A nice native would be ideal, though and I appreciate the idea!

As someone also in the market for a horse (bigger though, so not competing) where do I find breed pages? Is it a FB thing?
There's some on Facebook- groups which you have to join to get around advertising rules I think, and also some breed society websites have a section for sales! Most of the ones I'm on are native ponies- so if you're looking for bigger they probably aren't much use, but Cobs UK seems to have a lot of cobs/coloured types advertised of all sizes.

Have you looked on nfed?

I've looked on there a few times- mostly seems to be a bit far up for me, but I'll definitely keep an eye out!

I'll check her out- thank you. Gloucester/Bristol area could be doable as I have friends in Bristol I could stay with!

I think all the breeds will have their own society but may be less use for horse buyers as most people are looking for a type, SJ, all rounder etc. rather than an explicit breed such as an Arab or Cleveland Bay.

Have you considered an Arab? I know a really lovely gelding for sale in Wales very quiet and non spooky for an Arab.

I'd love an arab or an arabx actually! My former boss used to breed arabs on a small scale so I have known and ridden quite a few- I know they can make great all rounders. I sort of assumed purebred arabs would be out of budget, though!

Do you have a link to an advert or anything like that?

Have you contacted Caroline Boulton in Penzance. She is on FB. Trereife Equestrian

There's a grey gelding in Somerset on arabianlines and a chestnut mare in Devon (she's only 5 though).
http://www.arabianlines.com/for_sale/index.htm

There's a stud in Devon that has some youngsters advertised on preloved. It might be worth asking if they have anything older. I think this is the stud. http://www.zenitharabians.co.uk/

Amber's Echo on here has a fantastic Connemara x called Toby for sale although I don't know if he's within budget..?? He's 5 but 15hh and is gorgeous though lol.

If you do a search on here you will probably find more info on him as well x

I appreciate all of your help! I'll have a look through them later!

Have you tried Probus Horse sales. They’re nr Exeter and imports from Ireland.
I’ve not had anything to do with them but he seems to give them a good trial period going by Facebook posts.

I hadn't, but from facebook, they definitely look like they might get the sort of thing I'm after in! The ones they've got at the moment are a bit young/big, but I might drop him a message as it seems like he's sold similar types to what I'm after recently!
