About 10 years ago when I was young (about 10) I can remember helping a lady at the yard I was at groom her stallion and she used a thumper. I'd never seen one before. I can remember this stallion falling asleep as she "thumped" him and her saying it helped circulation, helped his muscles and brought a shine to his coat.

Never seen once since and had all but forgotten about it until today when I went shopping and saw one - so I bought it for my boy!

Anyone used one/use one regularly? Do they really have benefits and do your horses like it?

The one I got is Dever saddlery suede one with a leather back :)

I am trying to remember the word I have always heard them called. I know exactly what you mean... I think it begins with an s. This is really bugging me now!

But to answer your question...nope, don't use one.

I still do it - great for your arms :D

Although haven't done it this year yet - I normally do it during the winter and early part of spring, stop in summer and riding more, and then again in the later part of October.

Our old Mare loved it and would fall asleep, Nugz is more alert through it but you can really see the muscles working with him :)

Oh good old days . strapping which done right is enjoyed by horse. "modern" days done by leather pad but by heck them days of wisping a pad from straw ..oh im aged lol :) done right brilliant for muscles
