Anyone use Belvoir bedding?

We have switched to it at our yard (YM trying to find a way to economise for us in the credit crunch!) and I haven't used it myself yet. However others that have have found that their horses eat it! And not just nibble it...they absolutely hoover it up like it's a yummy giant chaff feed!

Having heard this I offered my boy a small handful today...and he wolfed it.

Has anyone else used it, and had this problem? 3 of the horses at the yard are already on it, 2 of which are sec As, and they don't eat it??

If I am thinking right they went out of business some years ago because of the amount of horses that were eating it and then colicing because of the fact it was hard to digest and had chemicals on it….. I did think that they had come back into business making equisorb or something similar which was like pine needles. I wouldn’t have expected them to bring back the proper Belvoir bedding though. Personally I wouldn’t use it, but I am sure that they have improved it!
 
Spray dettol on it and it should stop your horse eating it. I have never used it but that is what i was advised to do for my horse that used to eat her straw and it worked!
 
I used to use Dengie chopped straw bedding without any problems (don't think they still make it) but tried the Belvoir when I couldn't get any. It made me ill, whatever it was coated in to stop horses eating it coated my nasal passages and mouth lining every time I mucked out and I had to keep going out to spit! I was telling my EDT about it and he said one of the racing yards he did had to stop using it as a lot of the horses were getting nosebleeds during training since they started using it.
 
The yard where one of my friend's keeps her horse has just started using Belvoir bedding. She loves it - no problems with horses eating it. Hers had one mouthful when she first put the bed down but that was it. It's easy to muck out and she loves the smell. It's not overpowering like the smell of Bliss and some of the other chopped straws. Apparently it is a different company producing Belvoir now - old company was bought out last year and Belvoir bedding relaunched and rebranded last year. They sponsor Sharon Hunt - so if it's okay for her horses then I reckon its okay for anyone's horses.
 
Hi, my name is Lisa Cooper and I am a Director of Belvoir Bed Limited. I've just come across the above posts and was concerned by the content in some of them. I can confirm that Belvoir Bed was acquired by us in 2008 and rebranded and relaunched in June last year. The product is completely different to the old Belvoir chopped straw bedding. It is a rape and wheat straw mix, which is chopped, shredded, dust extracted and then treated with an exclusive natural formula containing lemongrass which is anti-fungal and antiseptic. We are really pleased with the feedback we are getting from customers using the new product, and just wanted to dispel and rumours that might be circulating.
 
I've used Belvoir bedding in the past and known a number of people who have also used it. The stuff I used was flax (equisorb). Never had any trouble with horses eating it.

I see the MD has just posted, so it might be worth oficially notifying the company if you are seeing lots of horses eating the product. I'm sure the odd horse will eat it (as for any bedding) and for those I'd be extra careful for impaction colic.

How much are you getting the stuff for if you don't mind me asking, last time I looked the price was extortionate and there are many similar products on the market that are cheaper.

ETA - just done a quick google and Equisorb is still available but it dowesn't appear to have any connection to Belvior, I could have sworn it was Belvoir who made equisorb
 
Hi, you are correct in that the guy that is associated with Equisorb used to manufacture the original Belvoir chopped straw bedding, which as I said in my earlier post is nothing like the current Belvoir Bed product. However the Belvoir brand was acquired by us and relaunched under the Belvoir Bed Limited banner and there is no longer any association.
