Does anybody here use HPD Feed Balancer or has tried it? Just wondering as it seems to be cheap with good reviews on its facebook page and website.

Hi I used to feed Spillers Orignal Balancer, but at about £30 a bag I have switched to HPD horse is none the wiser! So I would recommend them for value for money!

I wouldnt touch it with someone elses barge pole! I cant find anywhere that it tells me what is actually in it and to me that doesnt bode well! It costs about the same as probalance where they tell you the ingredients :)

Actually ignore that, I just found it! But now I definitely wouldn't use it. The copper and zinc arent high enough for me and they are genrealy missing from UK grazing, plus it contains iron which I wouldnt supplement :)

FrankieCob,

Very interesting. I was using Spillers original balancer then got a bag of the HPD balancer coz my yard colleague was getting some and it was a lot cheaper, but after reading your comment may switch over to the progressive Earth probalance as it may even be cheaper still!

At present my boy gets daily - 1 scoop of Dengie Mollasses free Hifi chaf, HPD balancer (1 1/2 cups) and Naf 5* magic and garlic granules, unlimited good quality hay and is turned out at night. He is well on it.

I was wondering whether there would be a detrimental effect with the Naf 5* magic because of its magnesium. If I changed over to the pro balance would I need to use the Naf 5* (I'm using it for spookiness and willingness to work) also is the pro balance like the leading brands of balancers as being in pellet form? Or is it like most supplements (like a powder and you only use a tiny scoop)?

Thanx in advance.

I'm guessing pro balance is powdered as it's only a 1.8kg bag.
I would email progressive earth asking them for advice :) I've just emailed both hpd and pro-earth.

Its powder. I add extra magnesium in the form of magnesium chloride, as well as salt, and linseed. I feed a huge dose of brewers yeast to my sweet itchy horse as well. If you feed the more expensive pro hoof theres more magnesium in it so you might note need to add more. Definitely worth asking them though, they are very helpful and they send you sweets in the parcel as well  I think I feed about 50gms a day, they send a 50ml scoop and I feed one of those a day

Just beware if you are going to try HPD balancers as my horse had a bad reaction to the feed within two days of switching over, so only on about 1/3 of recommended amount. He came up in hives all over and had to have injections from vet to bring them down. He has never reacted to anything before and the only thing that we had changed was the feed. HPD were no help at all and ignored all e-mails/calls when I tried contacting them to get a list of what was in the feed. Apparently the nutritionist was on holiday and no one else could help.....this went on for about 2 months and I have now given up. Certainly would not recommend!!.

Thanks for the warning! Did you check the one they had on their website? Don't think I will risk it anyway

Thanks for that Taraj. He seems to be ok at the moment, one week I to HPD balancer, no hives etc. but I think I may switch over to the Pro balance as they pm'd me straight back with an answer regarding the question of 5* magic! I would much rather feed my boy more forage than concentrates! The hay I get is second to none as the site used to be a dairy farm and they cut our hay from the adjacent fields to where we graze out GGs. X
