We suffer with terrible midges where we live, making life miserable for both horses and people. Fly sprays don't work at all, I have tried the Think Fly supplement which did have some effect on the midges and am now halfway through a tub of Fly Free which not only doesn't work, but my mare hates the smell/taste of it (can't blame her; it smells like Stockholm tar!).

There are machines on the market which attract midges/mosquitoes and are meant to be very effective:

I was just wondering if anyone on here as actually bought one - are they any good and roughly how much do you spend on the CO2 and attractant cansisters per summer?

I think that you would be fighting a losing battle, is it possible to improve the environment, is there a lot of standing water, or some ferns or other vegetation that attracts them and allows them to breed.
Midgies are endemic in Scotland, and they seem to like certain conditions, they are not so keen on open spaces or windy conditions.
It might be easier to keep horses inside during the day tbh.
