I'm about to start the 7 injection course of Adequan on my filly and wondered if anyone has used it. My vet said that it could cause swelling and that some horses develop abcesses. Any experiences good or bad?

I have had several elderly horses on this permantly at work, on a once a month basis, after the original course. Weve never ever had any problems on it at, very easy to inject aswell. Were got a older horse on it now, and hes absolutly fine and hes been on it a year. :)

yes, I hate needles and I managed to do it without problems. I would alternate the side of the neck each time and we never had any problems. I believe you can also do it in the bum muscle too xx

Brilliant stuff, but have not had horses have the 7 day course -as they have had it as joint medication. No side effects or probs when my horse had it injected in to the joint, but he was given a precautionary shot of antib's as well...

M, why does your Filly need adequan? We tried it on Lotto but it didin't have much effect, after using the IRAP on Hen over the last 12 months I would prefer to use that tbh.

Western trainers swear by it and its done twice a year as a matter of course. Im not too happy about fixing things that aren't broken but if it doesn't do any good, it wont do any harm (hurt my savings like hell!). Its so hard being the owner of a horse in training but Im learning to keep my mouth shut (most of the time).

Used it myself for 7 days to inject my horse, never had any problems, just i/m in different places :)

And my horse too don't forget! You injected my horse i/m too, once a week for six weeks because I was too nervous to do it myself (although I am ok with it now)!
